BROWNS RIDE 28-RUN EXPLOSION TO 'W' OVER A'S
4 St. Louis Hitters Accrue 4-Plus Hits & RBIs
ST. LOUIS, Sept. 14 (AP) - The St. Louis Browns scored a major league season
high 28 runs en route to a blowout 28-6 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics
in the first game of a doubleheader at Sportsman's Park. The next highest
runs scored total in the big leagues this year is 26, by the Boston Braves at
Pittsburgh on Aug. 29. Four Browns hitters amassed at least four hits and
four runs batted in: Ollie Bejma (4 hits, 4 RBIs), Jack Burns (4, 5),
Bruce Campbell (4, 4) and Frank Grube (4, 4).
The Browns wreaked havoc with big innings, scoring four times in the first, nine
times in the third, eight times in the fifth and seven times in the sixth.
Prior to this contest the biggest inning for St. Louis this year had been seven
runs. The Browns accomplished all of their scoring without the benefit of
a home run while sending 14 men to the plate in the third inning, 12 in the
fifth and 12 in the sixth.
Seven members of the St. Louis starting lineup scored at least three runs.
Philadelphia used four pitchers and only one--Bill Dietrich, the last of the
four--was even remotely effective. Dietrich tossed the final 2 2/3 innings
of shutout baseball. The other three--starter Jack Wilson, George Caster
and Whitey Wilshere--pitched a combined 5 1/3 innings while allowing all 28 runs
(24 earned) on 25 hits, walking eight, hitting a batter, and uncorking a pair of
wild pitches.
Browns starter Bobo Newsom surrendered two runs to the A's in the top of the
first inning but found himself leading 21-2 by the time he took the mound in the
top of the sixth. He was touched for three more runs in that inning and
was lifted in favor of Jack Knott who mopped up, allowing one run over the final
3 1/3 innings of play.
The previous high scoring game for the Browns was on June 5 when St. Louis beat
the Chicago White Sox 16-1 at Comiskey Park.
