SWIFT KEEPS GIANTS' BATS ICE COLD
N.Y. Shut Out for 2nd Straight Game
NEW YORK, Sept. 11 (AP) - Bill Swift fired a two-hit shutout leading the
Pittsburgh Pirates past the New York Giants 2-0 at the Polo Grounds. It
was the second consecutive whitewash for the Pirates against the Giants; Waite
Hoyt blanked New York on four hits yesterday. If anything, Swift was even
more dominant than Hoyt. The Giants managed only four baserunners on the
game, one of them the result of a fielding error by second baseman Tommy
Thevenow. None of those baserunners advanced past first base and three of
them were erased in double plays.
For the second straight day, the Giants wasted a strong pitching effort.
It was Hal Schumacher yesterday; today it was Roy Parmaelee who received no
support. Parmalee allowed single runs in the fifth and sixth innings and
nothing else, but given how thoroughly Swift controlled the Giants lineup, once
the first Pirates run scored the game felt out of reach.
Arky Vaughn, who finished with three hits, led off the top of the fifth was a
single but was eliminated when Pie Traynor bounced into a double play. But
Gus Suhr singled and stole second, then scored on Thevenow's base hit to right
to put Pittsburgh ahead 1-0.
In the sixth, Lloyd Waner led off with a single and was forced at second on Fred
Lindstrom's fielder's choice grounder. Paul Waner followed with a single
to center and Lindstrom beat Jo-Jo Moore's throw to third. Vaughn then
lifted a fly to center, scoring Lindstrom to make the score 2-0. That
ended the afternoon's scoring.
Swift retired the first 12 batters he faced, then allowed a single to Mel Ott to
open the bottom of the fifth. But Travis Jackson flied to right and Hank
Leiber grounded into an inning-ending double play.
In the seventh, Moore reached on Thevenow's error but three straight fly balls
quickly ended the frame.
In the eighth, Leiber singled with one out but pinch hitter George Watkins
rolled into a double play. In the ninth, pinch hitter Lefty O'Doul drew a
one-out walk--the only free pass of the game issued by Swift--but Moore
immediately followed with the third double play grounder of the game off a New
York hitter's bat to end the contest.
Swift's effort represents just the 16th time this season that a pitcher has
thrown a complete game while allowing two hits or fewer and the first time a
Pirates starter has accomplished the feat this year.
The Giants have picked a bad time to slip into an offensive slumber. In
just two days, New York hosts the St. Louis Cardinals for four critical games
and if the contests are to have meaning, the Giants have to remain within
shouting distance of the first place Redbirds. The Cardinals lead the
Giants by six games in the National League standings, pending the outcome of St.
Louis' doubleheader at Philadelphia.
