DAVIS STIFLES CARDS AS PHILS EARN DH SPLIT
Redbirds Shut Out for 1st Time Since May
PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 9 (AP) - Curt Davis tossed a complete game two-hitter
leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals
in the second game of a doubleheader at the Baker Bowl. The win secured a
doubleheader split; the Cardinals pounded the Phillies in the opener,
12-1. Davis became just the eighth National League hurler to throw a
complete game shutout while allowing two hits or fewer this year and the first
member of the Phillies pitching staff to do so. It was only the third time
this season that the Cardinals, the most prolific scoring team in the NL this
season, have been shut out, and it's the first time since May 22 when Al Smith
of the New York Giants tossed a two-hit shutout of his own at the Redbirds.
The Phillies gave Davis an early cushion. In the opening frame,
consecutive one-out singles off the bats of Lou Chiozza, Ethan Allen and Johnny
Moore put Philadelphia on top 1-0. Kiddo Davis led off the bottom of the
second with a double off St. Louis starter Bill Walker, advanced to third on
Jimmie Wilson's fly ball and then scored when Curt Davis helped himself by
launching a fly ball to center field. Kiddo Davis tagged and scored and
the Phillies now led 2-0. In the third, Chiozza, Allen and Moore again all
reached base to open the frame, via single, walk and walk respectively, filling
the bases. Bucky Walters fanned for the first out but Dolph Camilli drew
the inning's third free pass, forcing Chiozza home and Allen tagged and scored
on Kiddo Davis' fly to center, giving the Phillies a 4-0 lead.
The Phillies added a fifth run in the bottom of the sixth on Dick Bartell's solo
shot to left, his third home run of the season.
Curt Davis, meanwhile, was completely handcuffing the Cardinals. He
retired 19 of the first 20 batters he faced; Leo Durocher's one-out infield
single in the third was the only blemish until the seventh inning, when Frankie
Frisch bounced a single through the box for the second--and final--Cardinals hit
of the game. Chick Fullis followed by lining into a double play, shortstop
Bartell to first baseman Camilli, to end the inning. Davis then retired
St. Louis in order in the final two frames to close the game. In all, he
faced 28 batters, just one over the minimum, in one of the most impressive
starts of the major league season. It was the 15th time this year that a
major league pitcher has thrown a complete game shutout without walking a batter
and only the fourth time that feat has been accomplished while allowing two or
fewer hits.
