GEHRIG'S 3-HR DAY KEYS YANKS 'W'
ChiSox Strand 13

CHICAGO, Sept. 8 (AP) - Lou Gehrig became just the fourth major leaguer this year to hit three home runs in a game and drove in five to lead the New York Yankees to a 7-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park.  The win pulls the Yankees to within 1/2 game of the first place Detroit Tigers in the American League standings.  It was the fifth multi-home run game of the season for Gehrig, most of any big league player, and it was the fifth time this year that Gehrig has driven in at least five runs in a single contest, also the most of any major leaguer.

The Yankees took the lead--one they would never surrender--in the top of the fourth, courtesy of Gehrig.  Babe Ruth opened the inning with a base hit and Gehrig hammered a George Earnshaw offering into the lower right field grandstand for his major league best 43rd homer of the season.

In the sixth, Gehrig increased the New York advantage to three with his second long ball of the game, a solo shot, also off Earnshaw.

The White Sox finally dented the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame.  Luke Appling drew a two-out free pass from Yankees starter Johnny Broaca and Jimmy Dykes followed with one of his four hits on the game, a double to the left-center field gap, scoring Appling to cut the deficit to 3-1.

But Gehrig came through yet again in the eighth inning.  Ruth singled leading off an inning for the second consecutive time and was replaced at first by pinch runner Sammy Byrd.  Gehrig wasted no time, unloading on a 1-0 offering from Earnshaw and depositing the ball over wall in right-center for his third home run of the game.

The White Sox got a run back in the home half of the frame when Zeke Bonura doubled and ultimately scored on Marty Hopkins' base hit, but New York pushed two more runs across the plate in the ninth.  Frank Crosetti reached first with one out on Appling's error and Red Rolfe tripled him home.  Byrd, who stayed in the game after running for Ruth, then drove home Rolfe with a base hit.  That brought Gehrig to the plate with a chance to hit his fourth home run of the game but instead he rolled into an inning-ending double play.  Still, the Yankees took a 7-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth.

The White Sox then made the Yankees sweat.  Evar Swanson led off the inning with a base hit and then third baseman Rolfe botched Jocko Conlan's double play grounder for an error, leaving runners on first and second with no outs.  Russ Van Atta replaced Broaca on the mound and retired Al Simmons on a fly ball to left but walked Bonura to load the bases.  Consecutive base hits by Appling and Dykes each drove in a run, making the score 7-4 with the potential winning run coming to the plate and only one out.  But Van Atta retired Hopkins on fly to shallow center, with the runners holding, and then induced Hank Madjeski to pop to Gehrig at first to end the game.
