HUBBELL, GIANTS WIN DUEL WITH WARNEKE, CUBS
Critz, Jackson Homer
NEW YORK, Sept. 7 (AP) - In one of the best pitching match-ups in the National
League this season, Carl Hubbell and the New York Giants defeated Lon Warneke
and the Chicago Cubs 4-1 at the Polo Grounds. The victory for Hubbell was
his 21st of the season and the complete game effort was his 25th in 31 starts
thus far this year. Warneke saw a personal four game winning streak come
to an end. It was also the first time in five starts that Warneke hadn't
completed what he started; the Cubs right-hander was lifted for a pinch hitter
following seven innings of work.
The game started out as the pitchers' duel that everyone anticipated and
remained scoreless into the bottom of the fourth when the Giants rallied to take
what would prove to be an insurmountable lead. Hughie Critz surprised
everyone, perhaps including himself, when he led off the frame with a home run
into the lower seats in left-center field. The long ball was his third of
the season and gave the Giants a 1-0 advantage. One out later, Mel Ott
drew a walk and Travis Jackson popped his 16th home run of the year, the ball
caroming off the facade of the left field upper deck, to put New York on top
3-0. It was only the second time in 35 appearances--30 of them starts,
that Warneke had surrendered multiple home runs in the same game.
After allowing a two-out double to Billy Herman and a walk to Woody English,
Hubbell retired 11 consecutive Cubs, and protected the three-run lead into the
seventh. But Tuck Stainback singled with one out and Gabby
Hartnett, who had three hits on the day, doubled to right-center, scoring
Stainback with Chicago's first run of the game. Suddenly, the tying run
was standing at home plate. But the Giants lefty retired Charlie Grimm and
Billy Jurges on ground balls to end the inning with New York still on top
3-1.
The Giants got the run back in the bottom of the inning. Jackson led off
by reaching on an infield single and Hank Leiber sacrificed him to second.
Harry Danning then lined a base hit to right, scoring Jackson and restoring the
three-run New York advantage.
The Cubs didn't quit. Stan Hack pinch hit for Warneke leading off the
eighth and promptly tripled to right-center. But Hubbell performed a
Houdini act to get out of the inning unscathed, even with the infield
back. He got ahead of Herman and induced a weak comebacker for the first
out. English was overly aggressive, swung at the first pitch and popped to
third. Hubbell then fanned English on three brilliant pitches to end the
inning, still leading 4-1.
Hubbell allowed a two-out single to Hartnett--the catcher's third hit of the
game, part of his 10th multi-hit effort during a 13-game hitting streak--before
retiring Grimm on yet another ground ball to end the game.
With the first place Cardinals idle, the Giants have now climbed to within 5 1/2
games of first place.
