CHISOX SNAP 14-GAME 'L' STREAK
Yanks Fall One Game Behind Detroit

CHICAGO, Sept. 7 (AP) - The Chicago White Sox used a five-run seventh inning to break open a close game and went on to end a major league season worst 14-game losing streak with a 9-5 victory over the New York Yankees at Comiskey Park.  The White Sox overcame a beanball inspired brawl in the top of the seventh inning that saw both starting pitchers ejected from the game.  Chicago third baseman Jimmy Dykes doubled, homered and drove in three runs.  The White Sox also persevered, winning despite committing three errors and allowing two unearned runs.

The Yankees broke out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in each of the first two frames.  Frank Crosetti led off the game with a triple and scored on Red Rolfe's fly to left.  In the second Crosetti's base hit drove home Art Jorgens, who had singled two batters earlier.

But the White Sox fought back to tie the game in the bottom of the second.  With one out, Luke Appling singled off New York starter Jimmy DeShong and advanced to second on Dykes' ground out.  Marty Hopkins and Merv Shea drew consecutive free passes, filling the bases.  Chicago starter Les Tietje then improbably grounded a two-run single through the box, knotting the score.

The White Sox took the lead in the bottom of the fifth.  Jocko Conlan led off with a walk and moved to third when Al Simmons rattled a double off the right-center field wall.  Zeke Bonura's fly out to the warning track in right allowed Conlan to score the lead run and Simmons to move to third.  Luke Appling grounded to second with the infield drawn in as Simmons held at third, but Dykes came through with a double to left-center, plating Simmons to give Chicago a 4-2 lead.

It was still 4-2 when the Yankees came to the plate in the top of the seventh.  DeShong led off and Tietje pushed him off the plate on an 0-1 pitch, drawing a glare from the batter.  On the next pitch, Tietje hit DeShong and the New York pitcher charged the mound as both benches emptied.  Both pitchers were ejected, which forced the White Sox to replace Tietje with Whit Wyatt who immediately induced a double play ball from Crosetti and a ground out from Rolfe to end the inning.

Johnny Murphy replaced the ejected DeShong on the mound for New York in the bottom of the seventh and immediately got into trouble.  Back-to-back singles off the bats of Conlan and Simmons put runners on first and second.  Bonura's long fly to left allowed Conlan to tag and advance, leaving runners on the corners with one out.  Appling then cracked a double to the left-center field gap, scoring Conlan and advancing Simmons to third.  Dykes came through with a drive into the lower grandstand in left field.  The three-run homer put the White Sox ahead 8-2.  Before the inning was over, Evar Swanson had singled home another run and Chicago took a 9-2 lead into the eighth.

Aided by a pair of errors, New York scored two unearned runs in the eighth and Crosetti's home run in the ninth capped the scoring, but it was too little, too late for the Yankees.

The loss, coupled with Detroit's doubleheader sweep of the Philadelphia Athletics at Navin Field, drops the Yankees a game behind the Tigers atop the American League standings.
