CARLETON,FULLIS PACE CARDS' ROUT OF DODGERS
St. Louis CF Bangs Out 5 Hits

BROOKLYN, N.Y., Sept. 6 (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals erupted for a season high 23 hits, leading to a 15-2 bludgeoning of the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field.  St. Louis center fielder Chick Fullis became the first Cardinals player to amass five hits in a game, including a pair of doubles, scored two runs and drove in three.  Second baseman Frankie Frisch had four hits, two of them doubles, scored three times and drove in two.  Right fielder Jack Rothrock was 3-for-3, drew three walks and scored four times.  Starting pitcher Tex Carleton tossed a complete game, scattering seven hits en route to the victory.

The game started off innocently enough.  St. Louis took a 1-0 lead in the second on consecutive singles off the bats of Spud Davis, Fullis and Leo Durocher.  Rothrock and Frisch opened the third inning with back-to-back base hits and Rothrock scored on Joe Medwick's fielder's choice grounder to give the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage.

The Dodgers cut that lead in half in the bottom of the fourth on Len Koenecke's RBI single.

The score remained 2-1 into the sixth when the Cardinals padded their lead.  Ripper Collins one-out solo home run into the left field bleachers, his 29th long ball of the season and fourth of the last week, upped the advantage to 3-1.  Davis followed with a single and scored on Fullis' double to make the score 4-1.

St. Louis blew the game open with five runs in the seventh.  Rothrock doubled with one out and advanced to third on Frisch's single.  Medwick's fly to center plated Rothrock to put St. Louis on top 5-1.  Collins singled Frisch to second and Davis walked, loading the bases.  Fullis' second two-bagger of the game scored two runs and Durocher followed with a base hit, plating two more.  The Cardinals now led 9-1.

Back-to-back doubles by Koenecke and Joe Stripp in the bottom of the seventh provided a second run for the Dodgers but it seemed only to have the effect of making the Cardinals mad.  RBIs off the bats of Medwick and Collins in the eighth increased the lead to 11-2 and four consecutive safeties with two outs in the top of the ninth plated four more runs.

Carleton stifled Brooklyn throughout, retiring the first eight batters of the game and the last nine hitters he faced as well, improving his record to 13-10.

The victory allowed the Cardinals to remain six games in front of the second place New York Giants, who defeated the Chicago Cubs 5-2 at the Polo Grounds.
