TERRY, STARTERS KEY GIANTS DH SWEEP
N.Y. 1B Raps Out 6 Hits; Hubbell Wins 20th
PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 4 (AP) - Bill Terry banged out a total of six hits and
Giants starters Carl Hubbell and Freddie Fitzsimmons both pitched effectively as
New York swept a doubleheader from the Philadelphia Phillies at the Baker
Bowl. Hubbell tossed a six-hit complete game in the opener, securing his
20th win of the season in the process. Fitzsimmons worked seven frames in
the nightcap and earned his 19th victory of the year, with relief help from Al
Smith. The Giants pulled to within six games of the first place St. Louis
Cardinals, who were idle.
In the opener, New York drew first blood with a run in the first inning.
Jo-Jo Moore opened the contest by reaching first on second baseman Lou Chiozza's
error, advanced to second on Hughie Critz's ground out and scored on Terry's
single.
The Phillies knotted the score in the second inning when Johnny Moore drew a
lead-off walk from Hubbell, advanced to second on Dolph Camilli's infield
single, moved to third one-out later when Kiddo Davis drew a free pass to load
the bases and came home on Bucky Walters' fielder's choice.
Neither team scored again until the eighth inning, though the Giants had several
chances. Back-to-back walks drawn by Mel Ott and Travis Jackson with one
out in the fourth inning off of Philadelphia starter Curt Davis put runners on
first and second but Davis struck out Hank Leiber and Harry Danning to
extinguish the threat. Terry led off the sixth with a double but was cut
down trying to advance to third on Ott's fielder's choice. Jackson
followed with a single to right but Johnny Moore cut down Ott in his attempt to
advance to third.
For his part, Hubbell didn't let another Phillies baserunner past second base at
any point in the game.
In the eighth, New York finally broke the deadlock. With one out, Terry
roped his second two-bagger of the contest. Ott followed with a double of
his own, plating Terry with the go-ahead run. Jackson lined out but Leiber
gave his team some insurance by dropping a single just inside the right field
line, scoring Ott to give the Giants a 3-1 lead.
That was more than enough for Hubbell who retired eight of the last nine
Phillies he faced, with a harmless one-out single off the bat of Johnny Moore
the only baserunner surrendered. The complete game was Hubbell's 24th in
30 starts.
In the nightcap, the Giants again jumped out on top in the opening frame when
Jo-Jo Moore led off the game with his 12th home run of the season, victimizing
Philadelphia starter Euel Moore. But the Phillies took their first lead of
the day with a pair of tallies in the bottom of the second off
Fitzsimmons. Johnny Moore opened the inning with a single and took third
on Camilli's double. Al Todd tied the game with a base hit, scoring Moore
and sending Camilli to third and Kiddo Davis' deep fly to center scored Camilli
to give the Phils a 2-1 lead.
Philadelphia added a run in the third when Dick Bartell reached on the first of
three Johnny Vergez errors and later scored on Johnny Moore's base hit.
The 3-1 lead held up until the sixth when the Giants tied the game. Terry
singled with one out and moved to second on Ott's base hit. Jackson struck
out but Leiber came through with a double down the right field line, scoring
both baserunners.
The contest was still tied in the eighth when New York broke the game open once
and for all. As usual, Terry got things started, this time by drawing a
walk off Euel Moore. Ott's single to right put runners on first and
second. Then, in a key development, Jackson's little infield roller was
booted by Euel Moore, loading the bases with one out. Leiber reached on an
infield hit, scoring Terry with the lead run, and Danning followed with a base
hit through the box, plating two more. Cy Moore replaced Euel on the
mound, but the Giants weren't finished. Vergez hit a deep fly to center,
scoring Leiber to make it 7-3 before Cy Moore could finally slam the door shut.
In the ninth the Giants added an insurance run that they really didn't
need. For the umpteenth time, Terry got the inning going with a lead-off
single and, as usual, Ott followed with a bse hit of his own, moving Terry to
third. Jackson's fly allowed Terry to tag and score and the New York lead
was now 8-3.
Smith replaced Fitzsimmons in the eigth and pitched a pair of scoreless frames
to close out the game.
In the doubleheader, Terry finished 6-for-8 with two doubles, a walk and four
runs scored.
