Campbell Pops 2 HRs for Browns

ST. LOUIS, Aug. 31 (AP) - Bruce Campbell became the first member of the Browns with a multi-homer game this season, leading St. Louis past the Chicago White Sox 12-5 at Sportsman's Park.  It was the 12th consecutive defeat for the slumping White Sox, the longest losing streak of the year to date in the American League and one off the major league high of 13 set by the Cincinnati Reds from May 17 through June 1.

The Browns seized the early lead off Chicago starter Les Tietje.  Harlond Clift drew a lead-off walk in the bottom of the first and advanced to third on Debs Garms' base hit.  Jack Burns rolled into a 4-6-3 double play, but Clift scored to give the Browns a lead they would never surrender.  In the second inning, the Browns scored four more times.  Ski Melillo led off with a single and Campbell followed by depositing a Tietje offering onto the pavilion roof in right field for his fifth home run of the season and a 3-0 Browns advantage.  Frank Grube was hit by a pitch and Alan Strange singled him to second.  St. Louis starter George Blaeholder sacrificed the runners to second and third and Clift singled to center.  Grube scored easily form third and when center fielder Mule Haas misplayed the ball Strange, who had held up at third, came home on the error to put the Browns on top 5-0.

The White Sox dented the scoreboard in the third.  Tietje led off with a double and scored two outs later on Al Simmons' base hit, but the Browns got the run back in the fourth when Clift tripled with two outs and came home on Garms' single.

Trailing 6-1, the White Sox tried to make a game of it in the fifth.  Evar Swanson doubled with one out and scored on Haas' single to right.  The throw to the plate  from Campbell was wild, allowing Haas to advance to second and Simmons' base hit left runners on first and third.  Haas tagged and scored on Luke Appling's long fly to left and Jimmy Dykes singled Simmons to third.  Bob Boken's double to left plated Simmons and chased Dykes to third.  Marty Hopkins popped to second to finally end the inning but the St. Louis lead was down to 6-4.

Campbell's second home run of the game, in the bottom of the fifth, upped the Browns' lead to 7-4 and that was the score when the White Sox tried to make one last push in the top of the seventh.  Simmons drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on Appling's base hit.  Dykes followed with a single to right, scoring Simmons and advancing Appling to third.  With the score now 7-5 and the potential tying runs on the corners with one out, Browns manager Rogers Hornsby summoned Ivy Andrews from the bullpen to replace Blaeholder in an attempt to preserve the lead.  Andrews immediately induced Boken to roll into an inning ending double play, keeping St. Louis on top by two runs.

That was essentially the game as the Browns rallied in the bottom of the inning on Melillo's two-run double, upping the advantage to 9-5 and slamming the door for good in the eighth.  Back-to-back doubles off the bats of Garms and Burns tallied a total of three runs, accounting for the final score.

The White Sox will attempt to avoid setting a new major league record for futility this season when their series with the Browns continues over the weekend.
