GOMEZ CONTINUES 'W' STREAK
3-Run 8th Inning Rally Snaps Tie

NEW YORK, Aug. 26 (AP) - Lefty Gomez won his sixth consecutive start, firing a complete game to lead the New York Yankees past the Chicago White Sox 6-3 in the first game of a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium.  The game was tied entering the eighth inning when the Yankees rallied for three runs in the bottom of the frame, capped by Tony Lazzeri's ninth home run of the season.

The Yankees opened the scoring with two runs off Chicago starter Sad Sam Jones in the second.  With one out, Ben Chapman doubled to right-center field.  Lazzeri then reached on shortstop Luke Appling's error, leaving runners on first and third.  Art Jorgens followed with a fly to right that was deep enough to score Chapman with the game's first run.  Gomez then helped his own cause with a double to the right-center field gap, plating Lazzeri to put New York on top 2-0.

The White Sox cut the deficit to a single run with an unearned tally of their own in the top of the third when Jones reached on a two-base throwing error committed by third baseman Jack Saltzgaver and scored on Evar Swanson's base hit to right.

The Yankees got that run back in the bottom of the third.  Lou Gehrig singled to left with one out, advanced to second on George Selkirk's grounder and scored when Chapman doubled to center.

Chicago again cut the New York lead to a lone run in the fourth.  Luke Appling drew a one-out walk from Gomez and scored on Jimmy Dykes' triple.

The Yankees held their 3-2 advantage until the seventh when the White Sox drew even.  Dykes dropped a lead-off single into shallow left and moved to second on Jackie Hayes' sacrifice.  Gomez fanned Marty Hopkins but Hank Madjeski rolled a single through the box, scoring Dykes to tie the game.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Yankees broke the game open.  Gehrig opened the frame with a single and stole second.  Selkirk was at the plate when Gehrig took second and was replaced with a count of 0-1 by pinch hitter Red Rolfe, who promptly bunted Gehrig to third.  Chapman followed with a triple to the Death Valley area in left-center field, plating Gehrig to make the score 4-3.  Phil Gallivan replaced Jones on the mound for the White Sox but it didn't matter.  Lazzeri greeted the new pitcher with a drive into the seats in the lower grandstand in left field to put New York on top 6-3.

In the top of the ninth, Gomez retired Dykes and Hayes easily for the first two outs, but then ran into trouble, again, due to some shoddy defense.  Rolfe, who had remained in the game at shortstop, kicked Hopkins' grounder for an error.  Madjeski followed by bouncing a single into center field and pinch hitter Jocko Conlan walked, loading the bases.  Swanson came to the plate as the potential lead run and worked the count full before grounding to Rolfe to end the game.

Since June 13, Gomez has allowed no more than three earned runs in 17 total appearances, including 15 starts.  During that time he is 11-3 with a 1.30 ERA and 12 complete games.  The seven-game winning streak matches a streak earlier this season by Gomez and is the second longest by a Yankees starter this year.  Johnny Murphy won 9 straight decisions, a streak that ended on August 19.
