BUSH FANS 9, CUBS SALVAGE SERIES FINALE
5 Chicago Batters Rap Out 2 Hits Apiece
CHICAGO, Aug. 25 (AP) - Guy Bush lost his bid for a shutout in the ninth hitting
but fanned a season-high nine batters leading the Chicago Cubs past the Brooklyn
Dodgers 7-1 at Wrigley Field. The victory prevented a series sweep on the
part of the Dodgers, who won the first two games of the set. Five Cubs
batters accrued two hits in the victory.
The Cubs jumped on Brooklyn starter Johnny Babich for five runs, ultimately
driving him from the mound in the fourth inning. Chicago dented the
scoreboard for the first time in the bottom of the second. Babe Herman led
off with a single and stole second base. Tuck Stainback struck out and
Gabby Hartnett flied to left, advancing Herman to third. Charlie Grimm
then made it 1-0 with an infield single, scoring Herman. Consecutive base
hits off the bats of Billy Jurges and Bush ultimately brought Grimm home to give
the Cubs a 2-0 advantage.
Stainback's ground out scored Woody English, who had walked to lead-off the
frame, to make it 3-0 in the third.
In the fourth, a two-out Chicago rally chased Babich from the game. Stan
Hack got things started with a double and scored when English tripled to the
left-center field wall. Cuyler's single to center plated English with the
fifth Cubs run and ended Babich's day. Ownie Carroll replaced the Brooklyn
starter and retired Herman on a fly to left to end the inning but the deficit
facing the Dodgers was now five runs.
RBI singles by Hartnett and English in the seventh and eighth innings upped the
Chicago advantage to 7-0 entering the ninth.
Meanwhile, Bush was stifling the Dodgers, striking out six batters in the first
four innings and seven one out into the fifth. He only fanned two more
hitters, but shut Brooklyn out through eight while allowing just four
safeties. But Len Koenecke opened the top of the ninth with a triple off
the base of the right field wall and tagged and scored on Joe Stripp's fly to
right. Bush responded by fanning Al Lopez--his ninth punch out of the
contest--and retiring pinch hitter Johnny Frederick on a grounder to third to
finish off his eighth complete game of the season.
