CAIN, A’S OUTLAST BROWN, TRIBE IN 12
Cramer’s 4th Hit is Game-Winner
PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 19 (AP) – Sugar Cain tossed a 12-inning complete game
without allowing an earned run as the Philadelphia Athletics defeated the
Cleveland Indians 4-3 at Shibe Park. Cain is just the fourth starting
pitcher in the major leagues this season to throw a complete game longer than 11
innings. Cain’s mound opponent in this contest, Cleveland’s Clint
Brown, is also a member of that group. Brown too was credited with a
complete game, but absorbed the defeat when he allowed Doc Cramer’s
game-winning single with one out in the bottom of the 12th.
Early in the game it seemed unlikely that either starter would be around at the
conclusion of the affair, let alone both. The A’s opened the scoring in
the bottom of the second when Pinky Higgins led off the frame with a double and
scored on Cramer’s base hit. Philadelphia doubled the advantage in the
third when Lou Finney doubled with two outs and came home on Higgins’ single.
The Indians evened the score with a pair of tallies in the fourth. Hal
Trosky drew a one-out free pass fron /Cain and moved to third on Odell Hale’s
two-bagger, When first baseman Finney kicked Sam Rice’s grounder, Trosky
scored and Hale took third; Cleveland now trailed just 2-1, Willie
Kamm’s followed with a fly to left that was deep enough to score Hale to knot the score at
2-2.
In the top of the fifth the Indians took their first lead when Milt
Galatzer doubled with one out and then advanced to third when center fielder
Cramer dropped Bill Knickerbocker’s fly ball for an error. Earl
Averill’s base hit plated Galatzer to make it 3-2. But the A’s tied it
in
the bottom half of the fifth when Cramer doubled and scored on a single off the
bat of Dib Williams.
After this uneven performance, both Cain and Brown took command. Cleveland
never advanced another runner past second base over the succeeding seven innings
and Brown matched that performance until the 12th.
In the bottom of the 12th, Brown retired Ed Coleman to open the frame but Eric
McNair drove a base hit to left and Frankie Hayes followed by rolling a
single into right field, putting runners on first and second. Cain hit for
himself and worked a walk to load the bases and Cramer followed by bouncing a
base hit between first and second, scoring Coleman with the game-winning run.
