HADLEY SNAPS LONG 'L' STREAK IN STYLE
5-Hit Shutout Paces Browns Past ChiSox
CHICAGO, Aug. 10 (AP) - Bump Hadley won for the first time in his last 10
decisions, firing a five-hit shutout to lead the St. Louis Browns past the
Chicago White Sox 3-0 at Comiskey Park. Hadley's streak of losses in nine
consecutive decisions dated back to a victory over the White Sox, also at
Comiskey Park, on June 6. White Sox right-hander Milt Gaston has lost 10
straight decisions; the active streak is the longest in the major leagues this
season.
The Browns scored the only run they would need in the top of the first inning
off Chicago starter Les Tietje. Harlond Clift led off the ball game with a
base hit and moved to second on Sam West's ground out. Jack Burns flied to
center for the second out but Roy Pepper came up with the big two-out hit,
lining a single to center to score Clift to give St. Louis a 1-0 lead.
The Browns added two insurance runs in the third. West cracked a one-out
solo home run to give St. Louis a 2-0 advantage. Burns followed with a
base on balls and Pepper lined a double to right-center, scoring Burns to push
the Browns' lead to two runs.
Tietje held St. Louis off the scoreboard until he was lifted for a pinch hitter
in the bottom of the sixth. Phil Gallivan tossed three scoreless innings
of relief for the White Sox.
But Hadley was the big story. He retired the first six batters he faced
before running into some trouble in the third. Marty Hopkins led off the
inning with a double and Merv Shea drew a walk. Tietje's sacrifice attempt
ended in a force at third for the first out and Evar Swanson fanned. But
Jocko Conlan singled through the box. Hopkins tried to score but center
fielder West gunned him down at the plate for the final out of the inning.
That was as close as Chicago came to scoring. Hadley retired the next 11
hitters he faced before hitting Jimmy Dykes with a pitch with two outs in the
seventh. Jackie Hayes blooped a single to right, with Dykes taking third,
but Hopkins flied to left to end the threat.
The White Sox had one more chance to make it a game in the bottom of the
ninth. Hadley hit Charlie Uhlir with a pitch to lead off the inning.
Luke Appling grounded to short, with Uhlir taking second. Dykes grounded
back to Hadley for the second out, with Uhlir holding at second, but Hayes
singled to left, advancing Uhlir to third. That brought the tying run to
the plate in the form of Hopkins but he grounded to Clift at third to end the
game.
The shutout is only the second for the Browns since May 20.
