GREENBERG EXTENDS 2B STREAK TO 7
Tigers Pound Tribe
DETROIT, Aug. 10 (AP) - Hank Greenberg doubled for the seventh straight game and
the Detroit Tigers amassed 15 hits en route to a 10-0 pounding of the Cleveland
Indians at Navin Field. Schoolboy Rowe fired a five-hit complete game
shutout--his first whitewash of the season--and was victorious for the 17th time
this year. Five Detroit batters finished with at least two hits. It
was the 23rd time this season that the Tigers have reached double figures in
runs scored, which ties the Indians for most in the major leagues.
Cleveland was shut out for just the second time this year; Detroit is the only
major league club yet to be held scoreless in a game this season.
The Tigers took the lead for good with three runs in the third off Indians
starter Oral Hildebrand. Rowe drew a lead-off walk and scored immediately
on Jo-Jo White's triple to left-center. Mickey Cochrane made it 2-0 with
an RBI-single to right center, plating White. Cochrane then stole second
and scored on Charlie Gehringer's base hit to center.
The score remained 3-0 until the sixth when Detroit blew the game wide
open. Goose Goslin led off with a single to left and, one out later,
Greenberg doubled the runner to third. Ralph Winegarner replaced
Hildebrand on the mound, but it didn't much matter. Marv Owen singled to
left, scoring both runners and giving the Tigers a 5-0 advantage. Pete Fox
drew a walk, putting runners on first and second and Rowe rolled a single into
left field, scoring Owen and advancing Fox to second. Consecutive singles
off the bats of White and Cochrane plated two more runs to put the Tigers on top
8-0.
In the eighth, Detroit added some unneeded insurance. Rowe drew a one-out
walk and, after White popped out, Cochrane ripped a double to right, scoring
Rowe to make it 9-0. Gehringer's base hit to left brought home Cochrane to
cap the scoring.
Rowe took a no-hitter into the fifth, but surrendered a lead-off single to Hal
Trosky. It wasn't until Dutch Holland doubled with one-out in the seventh
that the Indians advanced a runner into scoring position. Cleveland's best
scoring opportunity came in the ninth. Pinch hitter Sam Rice singled and
was forced at second by Bill Knickerbocker. Earl Averill singled to
right-center, moving Knickerbocker all the way to third. But Rowe found
his focus and induced Holland to ground into a game-ending 1-4-3 double play,
preserving the shutout.
