DEAN IS FIRST TO 20
Collins Homers, Drives in 3
CINCINNATI, Aug. 7 (AP) - Dizzy Dean became the first pitcher in the major
leagues this season to win 20 games, leading the St. Louis Cardinals past the
Cincinnati Reds in the first game of a doubleheader at Crosley Field.
Ripper Collins led the St. Louis attack with three hits, including his 22nd home
run of the season, and drove in three runs. Jack Rothrock also homered for
the Cardinals.
The Cardinals jumped out in front in the top of the first with an unearned run
off Reds starter Si Johnson. Frankie Frisch reached with two outs when Wes
Sculmerich dropped his fly ball. Joe Medwick singled Frisch to second and
Collins brought the run home run with a double.
The Reds got that run back off Dean in the bottom half of the opening
frame. Gordon Slade singled with one out and advanced to third on Mark
Koenig's base hit. A walk to Jim Bottomley filled the bases and Chick
Hafey's fly to center brought Slade home with the tying run.
St. Louis took the lead for good in the fourth on Collins' home run to
right. In the sixth, the Cardinals made it a two-run game when Rothrock
led off the inning with his seventh home run of the season.
The Cardinals added an insurance run in the seventh when Bill DeLancey led off
with a triple to left-center and scored one out later on Leo Durocher's long fly
to center.
The Reds got a run back in the seventh when Schulmerich led off with a triple of
his own and scored on Adam Comorosky's fly to left, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
But the Cardinals broke the game open in the eighth with a big two-out rally,
courtesy of another Cincinnati error. Frisch started things off with a
double to left and advanced to third when Medwick reached on third baseman
Koenig's miscue. An infield single off the bat of Collins brought Frisch
home and moved Medwick to second and DeLancey's double into the left field
corner scored Medwick and Collins to give St. Louis a 7-2 lead.
A passed ball allowed the Reds to score an unearned run in the ninth, but it was
far too little too late.
The Cardinals have 50 games left and it remains an open question as to whether
Dean will be able to make a run at 30 victories.
The loss was Johnson's 17th, tying him with teammate Paul Derringer for most in
the National League. Milt Gaston of the Chicago White Sox holds the major
league lead with 18 defeats.
