BRIDGES' SHUTOUT COMPLETES TIGERS SERIES SWEEP
Gehringer's Average Falls Below .400
DETROIT, Aug. 6 (AP) - Tommy Bridges scattered six hits en route to his third
complete game shutout of the season and the Detroit Tigers completed a
three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox with a 4-0 victory at Navin
Field. White Sox left fielder Al Simmons saw his 21-game hitting streak
come to an end after an 0-for-4 day and Tigers second baseman Charlie Gehringer
also went hitless and saw his batting average drop below .400 for the first time
since June 5.
Bridges and Chicago starter Ted Lyons matched scoreless innings through three
and Bridges didn't allow a hit to the White Sox until Zeke Bonura singled with
two outs in the fourth. After Bridges stranded Bonura by retiring Luke
Appling to end the top of the inning, his Tigers teammates gave him the lead in
the bottom half. Gehringer opened the frame by reaching on
second baseman Jimmy Dykes' error and moved to second on Goose Goslin's
sacrifice. Billy Rogell's base hit--the second of three on the day--scored
Gehringer with the game's first run and Hank Greenberg doubled home Rogell to
give Detroit a 2-0 advantage.
The Tigers added some insurance with a two-out rally in the sixth. After
Gehringer and Goslin grounded out, Rogell and Greenberg repeated their fourth
inning pattern, with Rogell singling and Greenberg's two-bagger chasing him
home. Marv Owen followed with a base hit to center, plating Greenberg with
the fourth Detroit run of the contest.
Bridges, meanwhile, was cruising along and didn't allow a White Sox baserunner
past first until the ninth inning. In the final frame, Simmons grounded to
short and Bonura flied to left. But Appling kept the game alive when
Goslin's diving attempt at Appling's line drive came up just short and the
Chicago shortstop pulled into second base with the team's only extra base hit of
the contest. Dykes then drew a walk but Bridges was able to bear down and
retire Joe Chamberlain on a fly to left to end the game.
It was the third straight win for Detroit, following a six-game losing
streak. The Tigers are now in first place, 1/2 game in front of the
Yankees pending the outcome of New York's game against the Athletics in the
Bronx.
