CARDS HANG ON LATE, SLIP PAST CUBS
Dean, In Relief Role, Wins 19th

CHICAGO, Aug. 2 (AP) - Ernie Orsatti's fielder's choice grounder scored Joe Medwick with the go-ahead run and Dizzy Dean tossed three innings of shutout relief as the St. Louis Cardinals overcame multiple Chicago scoring opportunities to defeat the Cubs 3-2 at Wrigley Field.  The victory is Dean's 19th, most in the major leagues.

The Cardinals broke a scoreless tie with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third off Chicago starter Bill Lee.  Leo Durocher reached on third baseman Stan Hack's throwing error to open the frame and moved to second on St. Louis starter Bill Hallahan's grounder to second.  Pepper Martin's base hit to right scored Durocher with the first run of the inning.  Martin then stole second and, after Jack Rothrock popped out, scored on a single off the bat of Frankie Frisch.

Hallahan took a shutout into the fifth but the Cubs crept within a run when Hack walked, stole second and scored on a base hit by Billy Herman.

Chicago tied the game in the sixth.  Babe Herman grounded a double down the right field line and advanced to third on Kiki Cuyler's sacrifice.  Gabby Hartnett evened the score with a single to left, plating Herman.

The game remained tied until the eighth.  Frisch drew a four-pitch lead-off walk from Lee.  Joe Medwick followed with a single to right, and the Cardinals found themselves with runners on second and third when Babe Herman overran the ball for an error.  Lee, pitching around Ripper Collins, walked him on four pitches to load the bases with no outs.  With the infield in, Spud Davis grounded to short and Woody English forced Frisch at the plate for the first out of the inning.  That brought Orsatti to the plate and Lee induced the ground ball he was looking for, but the Cubs were only able to get the force on Davis at second.  Medwick scored on the play, giving St. Louis a 3-2 advantage.

Dean, who had come on in the seventh, started his second inning of work by retiring Cuyler on a ground ball but he surrendered a single to Hartnett--the third hit of the game for the Cubs catcher.  Hartnett was replaced at first by pinch runner Augie Galan, who advanced to second on Charlie Grimm's ground out.  Hack walked, putting runners on first and second, but Dean rose to the occasion by striking out pinch hitter Chuck Klein to end the inning.

Reliever Guy Bush set down the Cardinals in order in the top of the ninth and Dean yielded a lead-off single to Billy Herman in the bottom half.  English struck out but Tuck Stainback picked out an 0-2 mistake from Dean and lined a single to left, putting runners on first and second with one out.  Babe Herman followed by lacing a sharp single to right, which Medwick handled on one hop.  Billy Herman held at third, giving Chicago the bases loaded with Cuyler at the plate.  Dean came through again, inducing a double play ball off the bat of the Cubs center fielder to end the game in dramatic fashion.
