HUDLIN EXTENDS 'W' STREAK AS STARTER TO 14
Burnett's HR in 8th Keys Tribe Comeback; Tigers Drop 5th Straight
CLEVELAND, Aug. 1 (AP) - Johnny Burnett's tie-breaking two-run home run capped a
three-run bottom of the eighth inning, leading the Cleveland Indians past the
Detroit Tigers 5-3 at League Park. Willis Hudlin was the beneficiary of
the late-inning comeback and extended his winning streak as a starter to 14
consecutive decisions. Hudlin is now 14-1 on the season. The loss
extended Detroit's losing streak to five straight, the club's second longest
skein this year. With the win, Cleveland moves to within 4 1/2 games of
the first place Tigers.
Detroit scored twice in the second inning off Hudlin. Charlie Gehringer,
who saw his 14-game hitting streak come to an end, drew a lead-off walk and
stole second base. Billy Rogell followed with a base hit to left, plating
Gehringer with the game's first run. Hank Greenberg drew a free pass,
putting runners on first and second and Marv Owens' long fly to right moved
Rogell to third with one out. Pete Fox then rolled into a force at second
and Rogell scored on the play to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
The advantage was short-lived. In the bottom of the frame, Hal Trosky led
off with a walk and Odell Hale followed with a triple to left-center, scoring
Trosky and cutting the lead to 2-1. Burnett's ground out plated Hale to
tie the game at two.
The Tigers regained the lead in the fourth when Rogell led off with a triple to
left and scored on Greenberg's fly ball.
Though neither team scored again until the eighth, both had opportunities.
Detroit left runners on second and third in the top of the fifth and Cleveland
stranded the bases loaded in the bottom half.
But the Indians continued to trail until the bottom of the eighth when Earl
Averill drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on Joe Vosmik's ground
out. Tigers starter Luke Hamilin retired Trosky on a pop to second but
Hale followed with his second triple of the game, this one off the base of the
center field fence, scoring Averill to tie the game at three. Burnett then
drilled the first pitch he saw from Hamlin over the right field screen onto
Lexington Avenue for his second home run of the season and a 5-3 Cleveland
lead.
Hudlin pitched around a two-out single off the bat of Owen for his ninth
complete game of the season.
