MUNGO'S 1-HITTER PACES DODGERS PAST BRAVES
1st NL 1-Hitter of Season
BOSTON, July 29 (AP) - Van Lingle Mungo became the first National League pitcher
to toss a complete game one-hitter as the Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the Boston
Braves 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader at Braves Field. Mel Harder
of the Cleveland Indians is the only other major league hurler to throw a
one-hit complete game this season; he did so on July 14 in a victory over the
Washington Senators. Mungo also became the third major league pitcher this
season to carry a perfect game into the seventh inning. Mungo retired the
first 18 Braves hitters of the game before yielding a lead-off single to Marty
McManus to open the bottom of the seventh.
The Dodgers jumped on top in the second inning when Tony Cuccinello belted his
eighth home run of the season off Boston starter Ed Brandt. The solo shot
came with two outs and gave Brooklyn a 1-0 lead.
In the sixth, the Dodgers added an insurance run. Al Lopez led off with a
single and Mungo sacrificed the runner to second. Buzz Boyle followed with
a base hit to right, with Lopez stopping at third. Joe Stripp's fly to
left then scored Lopez to put Brooklyn on top 2-0.
After the Dodgers loaded the bases in the top of the seventh but failed to
score, the Braves snapped the perfect game on the McManus base hit to open the
bottom half of the inning. Mungo then issued his first free pass of the
game, walking Les Mallon to put runners on first and second. Buck Jordan
then sacrificed the runners to second and third and Wally Berger's ground out to
third scored McManus to make the score 2-1, and advanced Mallon to second.
Randy Moore was then walked intentionally which brought Pinky Whitney to the
plate. Mungo induced him to ground to third to end the inning.
Brooklyn nearly broke the game open in the eighth, but Brandt managed to wriggle
out of trouble. Boyle walked to open the inning and Stripp sacrificed him
to second. Lonny Frey then drew a free pass of his own, putting runners on
first and second. Danny Taylor's infield single--on an 0-2 pitch--filled
the bases with just one out. But Sam Leslie bounced into a 1-2-3 double
play to extinguish the threat.
Mungo walked Tommy Thompson to open the bottom of the eighth but retired pinch
hitter Hal Lee and then induced a double play ball off the bat of Brandt.
Cuccinello led off the top of the ninth with an infield single but was
immediately erased by Koenecke's double play grounder. It was the fifth
double play the Braves turned in the game, matching the club and major league
high marks for the year.
In the bottom of the ninth, Mungo retired McManus on a ground ball, induced
Mallon to pop out and ended the game in style by fanning Jordan.
It was the 16th complete game of the season thus far for Mungo and his seventh
victory in his last nine starts.
