WARNEKE CONTINUES DOMINANCE OF REDS
Cubs Right-Hander Records ML Best 6th Shutout
CINCINNATI, July 28 (AP) - Lon Warneke tossed his major league best sixth
shutout of the season, leading the Chicago Cubs past the Cincinnati Reds 4-0 at
Crosley Field. It was the 13th time the Reds have been shut out this
season, by far the most in the major leagues, eight of them at home.
Warneke has completed dominated Cincinnati this season. In three starts
thus far, the Cubs righty is 3-0, with three complete game, two of them
shutouts. In the remaining start, he allowed only one run. Warneke's
earned run average against the Reds this season is 0.33 (one run allowed in 27
innings). Warneke has now won nine of his last 10 decisions overall.
Reds starter Paul Derringer fell to 2-16 on the season and has lost six straight
decisions and eight of his last nine. Despite posting an ERA of 3.37 in
four starts against the Cubs, Derrigner is 0-3 vs. Chicago this year.
The game was scoreless through four innings as the Cubs repeatedly failed to
cash in on scoring opportunities. Chicago stranded six baserunners in the
first four frames. The Reds managed to put only three men on base through
the fourth inning and one of those was courtesy of Cubs second baseman Billy
Herman's error.
In the fifth, the Cubs broke through when Woody English drew a one-out walk,
stole second base and scored on Chuck Klein's single.
After stranding two more runners in the sixth, Chicago added some insurance in
the seventh. Billy Herman drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on
English's base hit. Klein's sacrifice moved the runners to second and
third and Babe Herman dropped a single into left, scoring both runners for a 3-0
advantage.
The Cubs capped the scoring and ended Derringer's day in the eighth. Gabby
Hartnett led off with a single but was forced at second on Charlie Grimm's
failed attempt to sacrifice. Stan Hack walked and Warneke bunted the
runners to second and third. Back-to-back walks to Billy Herman and
English forced in a run and that was it for Derringer. He was replaced by
Ted Kleinhans who got Klein on a comebacker to avoid further damage, but the
Chicago lead was now 4-0.
Warneke, meanwhile, was on cruise control. The only time the Reds advanced
a runner past second base was in the second inning. Jim Bottomley reached
on Billy Herman's miscue and Chick Hafey struck out. Harlin Pool's base
hit to right gave Cincinnati a legitimate scoring opportunity by putting runners
on the corners. But Ernie Lombardi grounded to the mound, with Bottomley
holding at third and Hafey moving to second. Wes Schulmerich ended the
threat when he grounded to short.
In the seventh, Pool walked with one out and Lombardi's single put runners on
first and second but Schulmerich popped to short and Derringer fanned to end the
inning. Warneke closed out the game by retiring the last eight batters he
faced in order.
