HUDLIN REMAINS UNDEFEATED AS STARTER, TRIBE COMPLETES DH SWEEP OF BROWNS
2-Run Cleveland 9th Breaks Tie in Opener
ST. LOUIS, July 28 (AP) - Willis Hudlin tossed a complete game to win his
13th consecutive decision as a starter to lead the Cleveland Indians to a 3-2
victory over the St. Louis Browns in the nightcap of a doubleheader at
Sportsman's Park. The victory cemented a doubleheader sweep for the
Indians who scored twice in the top of the ninth inning of the opener, breaking
a 2-all tie en route to a 4-2 win.
Hal Trosky and Sam Rice both homered for Cleveland in the nightcap. Trosky,
Rice and Odell Hale each had three hits for the Indians in the opener in support
of Mel Harder, who won his fourth consecutive start. Harder has now been
victorious in 13 of his last 14 starts.
In game one, the Indians took the lead in the first when Joe Vosmik doubled with
two outs and scored on Hale's base hit. The Browns tied the game in the
third when Roy Pepper singled home Jack Burns, who had doubled. Cleveland
regained the lead in the seventh when Sam Rice drove home Johnny Burnett, who
led off the frame with a two-bagger. St. Louis tied the game in the bottom
of the eighth when Bruce Campbell's base hit scored Sam West, who led off the
inning with a single.
In the top of the ninth, Bill Knickerbocker opened with a base hit to
center. Burnett sacrificed him to second. In a key moment, Browns
third baseman Harlond Clift let Glenn Myatt's grounder trickle through his legs
for an error. The play allowed Knickerbocker, who had held at second, to
advance to third. Harder then lifted a fly ball to left for the second
out. Knickerbocker came in to score and the throw to the plate from left
fielder Roy Pepper was wild, allowing Myatt to scurry all the way to
third. He scored on Rice's double, giving the Indians a 4-2 lead before
Earl Averill grounded to third to end the inning. Harder pitched around an
error committed by Trosky in the ninth to close out the game.
In the nightcap, Cleveland jumped out on top with two runs in the fourth.
Trosky's 18th home run of the season, a solo shot to dead center, made it
1-0. Hale then drew a walk from Browns starter Bump Hadley and scored on
Knickerbocker's double. West's fourth homer of the year, a solo shot with
two outs in the fifth that landed on the right-center field pavilion roof, upped
the Indians lead to 3-0.
Hudlin was cruising, taking a six-hit shutout into the eighth inning, and
retired pinch hitter Frank Grube and Clift easily to open the frame. But
West singled and Burns doubled him to third. Pepper then lined a two-run
single to right, cutting the Cleveland advantage to a single run. Campbell
grounded to short to end the inning.
Reliever Dick Coffman set the Indians down in order in the top of the ninth but
Hudlin shrugged off the two-out difficulties in the previous inning and retired
Rollie Hemsley, Ski Melillo and pinch hitter Rogers Hornsby in the bottom of the
ninth to end the game.
