DEAN EARNS 17TH 'W', 5TH SHUTOUT
Cards Extend NL Lead to 3 Games
NEW YORK, July 23 (AP) - Dizzy Dean tossed a four-hit complete game shutout and
the St. Louis Cardinals mustered just enough offense to slip past the New York
Giants 2-0 at the Polo Grounds. It was the 17th win of the season for the
Cardinals right-hander, tops in the major leagues, and his fifth shutout, tying
him with Lon Warneke of the Chicago Cubs for the National League lead. The
complete game was Dean's 16th, one behind Carl Hubbell of the Giants who sits
atop the NL in that category.
Dean was matched up against New York's Hal Schumacher, who pitched a strong game
of his own, but it wasn't quite enough. In the top of the very first
inning, Pepper Martin singled with one out and advanced to second on Jack
Rothrock's base hit to center. Joe Medwick grounded into a fielder's
choice, forcing Rothrock at second but Ripper Collins followed with a
first-pitch ground ball single to right, scoring Martin with the game's first
run. Bill DeLancey drew a walk to load the bases and Schumacher fell
behind Ernie Orsatti 3-1 before inducing a grounder to third to end the
inning.
If the Cardinals thought that Schumacher's shaky first frame was going to be
indicative of his performance throughout the game, they were sorely
mistaken. The Giants righty shut St. Louis out over the next seven innings
without letting a baserunner advance past second.
But Dean was even better. He retired the first 11 Giants batters he faced,
walked Bill Terry with two outs in the fourth and surrendered an infield hit to
Mel Ott to put runners on first and second but then retired Lefty O'Doul on a
ground ball to end the inning. Dean yielded a one-out double to Jo-Jo
Moore in the sixth and then, one out later, was dinged by a swinging bunt single
off the bat of Terry to put runners on first and third with two outs before
retiring Ott on a grounder to third. Those were the only plausible threats
that the Giants had in the entire game; no other baserunners made it as far as
second base.
In the top of the ninth, DeLancey led off and got just enough of a Schumacher
fastball to reach the lower grandstand above the 352-foot sign in straight away
right field for his second home run of the season and a much needed Cardinals
insurance run. Schumacher retired the next three batters in order but St.
Louis took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth.
Terry looped a lead-off single into center to open the last of the ninth,
bringing the potential tying run to the plate, but Dean retired Ott on a routine
fly to center, and then turned O'Doul's comebacker into a force at second
base. Johnny Vergez then flied to left and Joe Medwick made the play to
end the game.
The Cardinals now hold a three-game lead over the Giants atop the NL standings.
