O'DOUL'S GAME-WINNING SHOT SALVAGES HUBBELL'S GEM
Slades 2-Out Game-Tying HR in 9th Delays Reds' Demise
NEW YORK, July 21 (AP) - Lefty O'Doul's lead-off home run in the bottom of the
ninth inning broke a 1-1 tie and gave the New York Giants a 2-1 victory over the
Cincinnati Reds at the Polo Grounds. O'Doul's blast, on the very first
pitch issued by Don Brennan, undid the effect of Gordon Slade's stunning two-out
game-tying home run in the top of the inning, which ended Carl Hubbell's bid for
a shutout.
Hubbell and Reds starter Allyn Stout matched scoreless frames into the bottom of
the seventh. Hubbell held Cincinnati hitless into the sixth inning, but
lost the no-hitter on Tony Piet's two-out single to left field. Stout
surrendered a single to O'Doul in the second, but shut the Giants out on just
four safeties through six. Only one baserunner advanced past second base
and that was O'Doul, who doubled with two outs in the fourth and advanced to
third when Reds right fielder Wes Schulmerich misplayed the ball. It was
rendered moot when Travis Jackson popped out to short to end the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Jackson led off the inning with a drive just
inside the left field foul pole that reached the upper deck for his 10th home
run of the year and a 1-0 New York lead. The Giants had a chance to add
some insurance in the same frame when Johnny Vergez followed Jackson's long ball
with a single to left. Gus Mancuso then bounced a base hit through the
right side of the infield. Vergez attempted to advance to third but
Schulmerich cut him down for the first out of the inning. Hubbell then
grounded into a fielder's choice and Jo-Jo Moore popped to second to end the
inning.
Both clubs were retired in order in the eighth and Hubbell easily retired pinch
hitter Jimmy Shevlin and Piet for the first two outs. Slade worked the
count to 2-2 and Hubbell fired a fastball. Slade was ready for it and
deposited it nearly halfway up the upper deck grandstand in straight away left
field. The home run was Slade's first of the season and quieted the
partisan Polo Grounds crowd of nearly 19,000. Hubbell retired Mark Koenig
on a routine fly to Moore in center, but the game was now tied, and in dramatic
fashion.
Brennan came on for the Reds to face O'Doul, the only player in the game with
more than one hit to his credit, to open the bottom of the ninth. The
first pitch was a fastball and O'Doul lined it into the lower seats in right
field for his fourth home run of the season and a 2-1 Giants win. It was
only the second time this year that a Giants player had ended a game with a hit
and both of them have been home runs. George Watkins hit a three-run homer
in the bottom of the 12th inning on May 28 to break a 3-3 tie with the
Pittsburgh Pirates.
The win is the 14th of the season for Hubbell and the complete game is his major
league leading 17th.
