HALLAHAN TOSSES 10-INNING SHUTOUT AS CARDS OUTLAST BRAVES
Davis' 2-Run Double Keys 3-Run St. Louis 10th
BOSTON, July 21 (AP) - Bill Hallahan became the first major leaguer this year to
throw a complete game shutout of more than nine innings as the St. Louis
Cardinals scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning to defeat the Boston
Braves at Braves Field. Boston starter Ed Brandt held St. Louis scoreless
for nine innings but finally succumbed, with a two-run double by Spud Davis
breaking the deadlock.
Both starting pitchers were magnificent, holding their opponent to just three
hits over the first nine frames. The only time either club advanced a
baserunner past second before extra innings was in the bottom of the fifth when
Braves second baseman Marty McManus led off with a double off Hallahan.
Shanty Hogan flied to right for the first out but Brandt drew a walk--the only
one drawn in the entire ballgame--to put runners on first and second.
Billy Urbanski then rolled into a fielder's choice, with Brandt being forced out
at second and McManus advancing to third. But Randy Moore flied to right
field to end the inning.
At one point during the game, Brandt retired 13 consecutive batters--following
Leo Durocher's single in the top of the sixth. Hallahan, meanwhile, didn't
allow a hit to the Braves after the McManus two-bagger in the fifth--until the
tenth inning. After Brandt drew the game's only free pass, Hallahan
retired 14 of the next 15 hitters he faced. The only exception was Red
Worthington, who reached on an error on Ripper Collins to open the seventh
inning and was erased two batters later when Hogan rolled into an inning-ending
double play.
The logjam was finally dislodged in the top of the tenth. Brandt retired
Jack Rothrock on a fly to right, but Joe Medwick broke the string of consecutive
batters retired by grounding a single into left field. Collins followed by
doubling into the left field corner, with Medwick holding at third. Davis
then ripped a double past third baseman Pinky Whitney, scoring both baserunners
to finally break the scoreless tie. Chick Fullis' grounder was booted by
shortstop Urbanski to put runners on first and third and Durocher looped a
single to right to make it 3-0 before Brandt retired Hallahan and Burgess
Whitehead to finally end the inning.
In the bottom of the tenth, back-to-back singles by McManus and Hogan brought
the tying run to the plate but Brandt--a dangerous bat in his own
right--grounded into a double play to end the game.
