MURPHY WINS 9TH STRAIGHT AS YANKS BLUDGEON CHISOX
Saltzgaver Homers, Drives in 5
CHICAGO, July 19 (AP) - Johnny Murphy won his ninth consecutive decision as a
starter and the New York Yankees pounded the Chicago White Sox 10-0 at Comiskey
Park. Though Murphy walked five, he held the White Sox to just three hits
in the complete game shutout. Jack Saltzgaver was the batting star for the
Yankees, with three hits, including a double and a home run, and five runs
batted in.
Murphy's first start of the year, on May 22 at Cleveland was a no-decision, and
he had another no-decision on June 17 against Detroit, but he's won all eight of
his other starts, plus a win in relief on May 12.
The Yankees broke out on top with a run in the top of the first against White
Sox starter Milt Gaston. Earl Combs led off with a double and Saltzgaver
drove him home by grounding a single into right field.
The game remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth when New York added a run on
Saltzgaver's solo homer to right. The Yankees then blew the game open with
five runs in the seventh. Lou Gehrig led off with a single and was
sacrificed to second by Bill Dickey. Frankie Crosetti walked and Myrill
Hoag struck out but Don Heffner's base hit plated Gehrig to make it 3-0, with
Crosetti advancing to third. Murphy then drove home Crosetti with a base
hit that chased Heffner to third. Combs walked to load the bases.
Saltzgaver followed with the big blow, a bases clearing double to the gap in
left-center field to make the score 6-0. Gaston was replaced by Harry
Kinzy who escaped further damage.
Murphy drove home the eighth New York run with a single in the eighth and
Crosetti's two-run double in the ninth capped the scoring.
Murphy held the White Sox hitless until yielding a two-out single to Mule Haas
in the sixth, but the best chance Chicago had to score came in the
seventh. Zeke Bonura opened the inning with a double and Al Simmons
dropped a single into center field, putting runners on first and third. A
walk to Luke Appling filled the bases with no outs. But Murphy struck out
Marty Hopkins. Hank Madjeski then grounded to Saltzgaver at third who
threw home for the force on Bonura. Kinzy fanned for the third out, ending
the threat that had appeared so promising. The White Sox didn't have
another baserunner until Appling and Hopkins drew consecutive walks with two
outs in the bottom of the ninth but pinch hitter Evar Swanson grounded to short
to end the game.
It was the sixth shutout of the season for the Yankees, and the first since
back-to-back whitewashings on June 27 and 28, the former also against the White
Sox. For Murphy, it was the second time he's tossed a complete game
shutout. The first was on June 10 at Yankee Stadium against the
Philadelphia A's.
