DEAN TWIRLS 4TH SHUTOUT AS CARDS EDGE BRAVES
St. Louis Starter Also Drives in Game-Winner
BOSTON, July 19 (AP) - Dizzy Dean became the first major league pitcher to win
16 games this season, tossing a four-hit shutout for good measure, as the St.
Louis Cardinals upended the Boston Braves 2-0 at Braves Field. It was the
fourth shutout of the season for Dean, second most in the majors this year
behind only Lon Warneke of the Chicago Cubs (5). The Cardinals have eight
shutouts as a staff this season and Dean has half of them.
Dean and Braves starter Bob Smith--who tossed his third complete game in four
starts thus far this year--matched zeroes for six innings. The St. Louis
right-hander was able to pitch out of a first-inning jam that wasn't entirely of
his making. After Smith set down the Cardinals in order in the top of the
frame, Dean struck out Boston lead-off man Dan McGee but catcher Spud Davis
misplayed the pitch and McGee was able to reach first ahead of Davis'
throw. Buck Jordan flied to center for the first out but Wally Berger
singled to right and McGee slid into third just ahead of Jack Rothrock's
throw. But Dean induced Hal Lee to pop to second for the second out and
retired Pinky Whitney on a fly to right to end the threat.
The Cardinals finally broke the scoreless tie in the top of the seventh.
With one out, Davis doubled into the left field corner. Ernie Orsatti then
reached on an infield single, leaving runners on first and third. Leo
Durocher's fly to left was too shallow to score Davis but Dean came through with
a single to center, plating Davis with the game's first run. Burgess
Whitehead grounded to first but St. Louis now held a 1-0 lead.
After Dean retired the Braves in order in the bottom of the seventh, the
Cardinals added an insurance run in the eighth with a two-out rally. After
Smith retired Pepper Martin and Rothrock, Joe Medwick doubled past Whitney at
third and Ripper Collins followed with a base hit to right-center, scoring
Medwick to make it 2-0.
After Dean retired Berger leading off the ninth he'd set down nine straight
batters but Boston brought the tying run to the plate when Lee singled.
Dean, however, got Whitney on a grounder to first and Tommy Thompson on a fly to
right to close out the game.
The complete game was Dean's 15th, ranking him second in the National League,
just behind Carl Hubbell of the New York Giants (16).
