BOSOX OUTLAST CHISOX IN 18-INNING MARATHON
Mulligan, Pennock Combine for 7 Scoreless Innings of Relief
CHICAGO, July 17 (AP) - Jimmy Dykes' bases loaded error with two outs in the
bottom of the 18th allowed the Boston Red Sox to break a 4-all tie and they went
on to defeat the Chicago White Sox 6-4 at Comiskey Park. It was the
longest game in the American League this year and the second longest in the
majors. The Cincinnati Reds and the Boston Braves played a 20-inning
contest on May 22.
The Red Sox broke out to a 3-0 lead early. In the top of the second,
Boston starter Wes Ferrell helped his own cause by singling home his brother
Rick, who had doubled. In the fourth, Lyn Lary singled with one out and,
after Wes Ferrell popped to second, Bill Cissell belted his second home run of
the season off White Sox starter Les Tietje.
But Chicago bounced back. They got on the board in the bottom of the
fourth when Al Simmons reached on a one-out error and then was forced at second
by Zeke Bonura. But Luke Appling tripled into the right field corner,
scoring Bonura to make it 3-1.
In the fifth, Marty Hopkins and Merv Shea drew back-to-back walks to open the
frame. Tietje fanned, after failing to get a bunt down, for the first
out. Evar Swanson then lined a single to left but Roy Johnson gunned
Hopkins out at the plate with Shea stopping at second. Jocko Conlan then
laced the second White Sox triple of the game, scoring both runners to knot the
score at three.
Both starters buckled down and held their opponents scoreless into extra
innings. Tietje was lifted for a pinch hitter in an unsuccessful effort to
break the tie in the top of the tenth and was replaced on the mound by Ted Lyons
in the 11th. The Red Sox mounted a threat, with Rick Ferrell drawing a
one-out walk and Lary singling him to third. Rick Ferrell hit for himself
and struck out but Cissell dropped a double just inside right field foul line,
scoring Ferrell with the go-ahead run and advancing Lary to third. Billy
Werber grounded to short to end the inning but Boston now was poised to win the
game.
Wes Ferrell retired Simmons to open the bottom half of the frame but Bonura
followed with a double to right-center and was replaced on second base by pinch
runner Sad Sam Jones. Appling tapped one back to the mound for the second
out but Bob Boken singled to left, scoring Jones with the tying run.
Hopkins then grounded out to end the inning with the game now tied at four.
Lyons retired the Red Sox in order in the twelfth and Joe Mulligan came on for
the Red Sox and pitched around Shea's lead-off single in the bottom of the frame
to send the game to a 13th inning. Conlan and Simmons lined back-to-back
base hits for Chicago in the bottom of the 13th, but Mulligan retired the next
three batters in order to extinguish the threat.
Werber singled off Lyons with one out in the 14th but was cut down by Shea at
second trying to steal by catcher Hank Madjeski. That proved key because
Ed Morgan followed with a base on balls and Johnson singled him to third.
But Moose Solters grounded out to end the inning.
The White Sox put two runners on base in the bottom of the 16th against Herb
Pennock, who had come on in the 15th inning, but couldn't score and a two-out
threat by Boston in the 17th went for naught.
In the bottom of the 17th, Lyons reached to open the inning when Cissell
committed a two-base throwing error and was sacrificed to third by
Swanson. But with the infield in, Conlan tapped to second with the runner
holding and Simmons followed by grounding to third, ending the threat.
Finally, in the top of the 18th, the Red Sox broke through. Lyons was in
his eighth inning of relief and yielded a lead-off single to Pennock.
Cissell sacrificed the runner to second. Werber grounded to short for the
second out but Morgan walked, putting runners on first and second. Johnson
then singled to left, filling the bases. On a 2-2 pitch, Lyons induced
Solters to bounce to Dykes, who had entered the game in the 12th, at first, but
the ball was booted, allowing Pennock to score the lead run. An obviously
distracted Lyons then walked Dusty Cooke on four pitches to force home another
tally before retiring Rick Ferrell on a pop fly to end the inning.
In the bottom half, Dykes reached when Lary kicked his lead-off grounder,
bringing the potential tying run to the plate, but Pennock retired Appling,
Boken and Hopkins in order to finally bring the game to a close.
