22-RUN EFFORT MAKES FOR EASY BOSOX SWEEP
Boston Matches ML High for Runs in Nightcap
CHICAGO, July 16 (AP) - The Boston Red Sox erupted for a season-high 22 runs,
annihilating the Chicago White Sox 22-3 in the second game of a doubleheader at
Comiskey Park. Coupled with a more traditional 5-3 victory in the opener
the Red Sox swept the twinbill. The 22 runs scored obliterates Boston's
previous high this season (15, also against the White Sox, on May 13 at Fenway
Park) and matches the major league high for runs scored this year to date.
The Red Sox were the recipients of a 22-run beating at the hands of the
Philadelphia A's on May 2 at Fenway.
In this contest, Boston set the tone in the top of the first, scoring four times
off White Sox starter George Earnshaw. Bill Cissell led off with a single
and advanced to second one out later when Ed Morgan reached on shortstop Bob
Boken's error. Roy Johnson plated the first run, singling to right with
Cissell scoring and Morgan advancing to third. Moose Solters then tripled
off the right-center field wall, scoring both runners and Solters came home on
Rick Ferrell's deep fly to center.
The score remained 4-0 until the fourth when the Red Sox blew the game open with
four more runs. Boken's second error of the game allowed Ferrell to reach
leading off the inning and and Lyn Lary's base hit to right moved Ferrell to
third. Johnny Welch's sacrifice put runners on second and third with one
out and Cissell's single through the box brought home both runners, making the
score 6-0. Billy Werber's base hit put runners on first and third and
Morgan's ground out brought home another run. Roy Johnson's base hit
brought in Werber to make the score 8-0.
While the game was effectively over at this point, Boston didn't quit.
They sent 14 batters to the plate in the top of the sixth, scoring nine times on
seven hits and four walks. Werber had a pair of hits in the inning,
including a two-run double, and scored twice.
The Red Sox scored five more times over the final two frames to account for all
22 runs. The White Sox finally got on the board with three runs over the
last two innings off Welch, but it was far too little and far too late. In
all, Boston had five different batters accumulate at least three hits apiece,
with three of them tallying four safeties.
The White Sox have now dropped 18 of their last 20 contests and have not scored
more than three runs in a game over the past seven outings.
