HAFEY'S 3-HR OUTBURST KEYS REDS ROUT
5 Cincy HRs Sets NL Season High
ST. LOUIS, July 6 (AP) - Chick Hafey became just the third major leaguer this
season to hit three home runs in a game, leading the Cincinnati Reds to an 11-3
pounding of the first place St. Louis Cardinals at Sportsman's Park. Ernie
Lombardi and Reds starting pitcher Benny Frey also homered, giving the Reds five
for the game, setting a new National League high for home runs in a single team
in one contest this season. The New York Yankees are the only other big
league club to homer five times in a game, doing so on April 26 at Philadelphia.
Hafey's first home run came in the top of the first inning and gave the Reds a
lead they would never surrender. With two outs, Mark Koenig doubled off
Cardinals starter Jesse Haines and Hafey followed with a blast into the left
field bleachers for a 2-0 Cincinnati advantage.
St. Louis got a run back in the bottom of the frame when Jack Rothrock singled
with one down and scored an out later on Joe Medwick's base hit.
Lombardi's blast over the left field fence in the top of the second made it 3-1
in favor of the Reds.
The top of the third was re-run of the first. With two outs, Koenig
reached on a single to center and Hafey followed with his second home run of the
game--the ball landed in almost the exact same spot of the bleachers--to put the
Reds on top 5-1.
In the sixth inning, Cincinnati blew the game open for good. Facing Paul
Dean, Jimmy Shevlin singled with one out and then, following a fielder's choice
grounder, Wes Schulmerich's base hit put runners on first and second. Frey
then helped himself by drilling the fourth Reds home run of the game. The
three-run shot increased the lead to 8-1.
In the top of the seventh, Hafey gave the Reds three more runs that they really
didn't need. Following walks to Gordon Slade and Koenig, Hafey drilled his
third home run of the game, and eighth of the season, putting Cincinnati ahead
11-3. The blast gave Hafey seven runs batted in for the contest, the top
mark for a National League player in a single game this year.
RBIs off the bats of Ripper Collins and Ernie Orsatti in the bottom of the
seventh pulled the Cardinals to within eight runs but it was far too little too
late and Frey went on to complete the game for his fourth victory of the season.
