HAINES POSTS LATEST 2-HIT SHUTOUT
Reds Blanked for 10th Time this Season
CINCINNATI, June 30 (AP) - Jesse Haines became the fourth major league hurler to
toss a two-hit shutout in the last week as the St. Louis Cardinals rolled over
the Cincinnati Reds 9-0 at Crosley Field. Haines allowed a total of only
four baserunners--two singles, a walk and a hit batsman--only one of which made
it as far as second base.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when the Cardinals pushed
across the only run they would need. Joe Medwick led off with a single
against Reds starter Si Johnson and moved to second when Ripper Collins
surprised everyone with a perfect bunt base hit. Bill DeLancey rolled into
a double play, moving Medwick to third with two outs and Ernie Orsatti came
through with a single to left-center to put St. Louis on top 1-0.
The Cardinals then seized firm control of the game in fifth. Pepper
Martin's one-out single got things started. He stole second and Jack
Rothrock drew a four-pitch walk. Frankie Frisch slapped an opposite field
single, scoring Martin and advancing Rothrock to second. Medwick then
doubled off the base of the left field wall, plating Rothrock and chasing Frisch
to third. Collins lifted a fly ball to the base of the right field fence
for the second out, but Frisch tagged and scored on the play and Medwick took
third. DeLancey's infield hit plated Medwick and St. Louis led 5-0.
The Cardinals added four insurance runs that they didn't really need in the
eighth. Orsatti singled and was forced at second by Leo Durocher's
fielder's choice grounder. Haines then singled to right, moving Durocher
to second. A passed ball moved the runners to second and third and
Martin's base hit to center brought Orsatti home, with Haines stopping at
third. Rothrock then sliced a double into the left field corner, plating
both runners and, when Frisch lifted a fly to right, Rothrock advanced to
third. Right fielder Adam Comorosky's throw was wild and Rothrock trotted
home with the ninth St. Louis run.
Haines needed only one of these tallies. He issued a one-out walk to Jimmy
Shevlin in the second, but stranded him at first. After retiring nine
straight Reds, Ernie Lombardi singled with one out in the fifth, but never
advanced. Tony Piet lashed a base hit with one out in the sixth, and took
second on a two-out passed ball charged to DeLancey, but moved no further.
And Piet was clipped with a pitch leading off the ninth inning, but was forced
at second and that baserunner was eliminated on a game-ending double play.
The contest marked the 10th time this season that Cincinnati has been blanked,
easily the most in either league.
