A'S EXTEND 'W' STREAK TO 16
Marcum Wins 5th Straight Start

PHILADELPHIA, June 30 (AP) - The Philadelphia Athletics scored five times in the bottom of the third inning and went on to defeat the Boston Red Sox 5-2 at Shibe Park for their 16th consecutive victory.  The winning streak is the longest in the major leagues this season.  A's starter Johnny Marcum earned his fifth consecutive win, yielding a pair of unearned runs in the seventh inning.  The Red Sox dropped their fourth in a row.

The A's blew open a scoreless contest with the big third inning.  With one out, Charlie Berry drew a walk from Red Sox starter Wes Ferrell and Marcum aided his own cause with a base hit, moving Berry to second.  Eric McNair then lined a single to right, loading the bases.  Ferrell missed on a 3-2 pitch to Doc Cramer, forcing home Berry to give Philadelphia a 1-0 lead.  Bob Johnson's swinging bunt went for an infield hit, scoring Marcum.  Jimmie Foxx then lofted a fly ball to deep right field that Dick Porter misplayed for a two-base error, allowing two more runs to score and Pinky Higgins' long fly to center allowed Johnson to trot home with the fifth run of the frame.

Ferrell held the A's scoreless from that point on, but the damage had been done.  Marcum took a shutout into the seventh inning, but Dib Williams' error on Jack Morgan's lead-off grounder gave Boston hope.  Roy Johnson forced Morgan at second but Moose Solters tripled off the right-center field light stanchion, scoring Johnson to make it 5-1.  Porter popped out but a passed ball charged to Charlie Berry allowed the second Boston run of the inning to score.

Marcum allowed only one more baserunner, so the Red Sox never managed to get the tying run to the plate before the A's right-hander closed out the game by retiring the final five batters he faced.

Despite the long winning streak, Philadelphia remains a game below the .500 mark and in fourth place in the American League.
