MUNGO OUTDUELS FITZSIMMONS IN DODGERS VICTORY
Moore Extends Hit Streak to 34 Games
NEW YORK, June 29 (AP) - Van Lingle Mungo tossed a three-hit complete game
shutout, out-pitching Freddie Fitzsimmons, as the Brooklyn Dodgers squeezed past
the New York Giants 1-0 before a crowd of nearly 30,000 at the Polo
Grounds. Jo-Jo Moore of the Giants, held hitless through his first three
plate appearances, slashed a one-out ninth inning single in his final at bat of
the contest to extend his major league best hitting streak to 34 games.
The Dodgers pushed across the only run of the contest in the top of the fourth
inning when Jimmy Jordan led off with a single, advanced to second on Len
Koenecke's base hit and scored when Joe Stripp singled through the box.
Brooklyn had good scoring opportunities throughout the game, stranding nine
baserunners through the first four innings, but scored only the lone run.
Unable to knock out Fitzsimmons, the Dodgers were held to just three baserunners
over the final five frames, none of whom advanced past first base.
But Mungo, who fired his second shutout and 11th complete game of the season in
18 starts, was even more effective. He retired the first 13 Giants batters
he faced before yielding a one-out single in the bottom of the fifth to Travis
Jackson, who was immediately erased on George Watkins' double play
grounder. The only other New York baserunner prior to the ninth was Bill
Terry, who drew Mungo's only free pass with two outs in the seventh.
Mungo took the one-hitter into the ninth inning but was greeted by Paul Richards
who lined a lead-off single to left. George Grantham pinch hit for
Fitzsimmons, but flied to center for the first out. Then Moore singled to
left on a 1-2 pitch, putting the potential winning run on base with one
out. But on the very first pitch to Hughie Critz, Mungo induced a bouncer
back to the box. Mungo found second baseman Tony Cuccinello for the force
on Moore and Cuccinello fired to Terry at first base to complete the game-ending
double play.
The loss drops the Giants into a virtual tie with the St. Louis Cardinals for
first place atop the National League standings.
