RUFFING SNAPS PERSONAL 3-GAME LOSING STREAK
N.Y. Starter Fires 2-Hitter as Yanks Cruise Past Nats
WASHINGTON, June 28 (AP) - Red Ruffing tossed a two-hit complete game shutout,
leading the New York Yankees past the Washington Senators 8-0 at Griffith
Stadium. The strong start ended a personal three-game losing streak for
Ruffing, who had gone winless for more than a month. The Yankees
right-hander last won at Sportsman's Park on May 27 against the St. Louis
Browns.
Ruffing's counterpart, Senators starter Montie Weaver, matched the Yankees
starting pitcher for five scoreless innings, but saw the roof cave in when New
York erupted for five runs in the top of the sixth inning. It all started
when Washington shortstop Joe Cronin booted Ben Chapman's lead-off grounder for
an error. Bill Dickey followed with a double off the tall right field
wall, putting runners on second and third, and Myrill Hoag then singled to
center, scoring Chapman with the game's first run and advancing Dickey to
third. Weaver then walked Don Heffner, filling the bases, and Ruffing
aided his own cause by lacing a two-run single to right-center, putting the
Yankees on top 3-0 and leaving runners on first and third. Frank Crosetti
hit into a fielder's choice, forcing Ruffing at second, but scoring Heffner to
make it 4-0 and Jack Saltzgaver's ensuing base hit put runners on the corners
yet again. Babe Ruth's single to right plated Crosetti to cap the inning's
scoring.
That was essentially the ballgame. The Yankees added a run in the seventh
when Dickey reached on a one-out infield single and scored two batters later on
Heffner's triple to right-center, and New York added two runs in the ninth to
account for the 8-0 final.
Ruffing held the Senators hitless into the fifth, when Dave Harris led off with
a single. The only other Washington safety was Eddie Phillips' two-out
base hit in the seventh. Ruffing walked five batters, but the Senators
never advanced a baserunner past second.
The game marked the fourth straight victory for the Yankees, who continue to
jockey for position with the Detroit Tigers atop the American League
standings. New York is now 21-6 on the road this season. The
Senators suffered their fourth consecutive defeat.
