TAYLOR HITS FOR CYCLE AS DODGERS WHIP CUBS
Brooklyn CF Scores 4 Runs

CHICAGO, June 27 (AP) - Danny Taylor became the second big leaguer to hit for the cycle in three days as the Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the Chicago Cubs 11-5 at Wrigley Field.  Ed Coleman of the Philadelphia Athletics accomplished the feat on June 25.  Taylor finished the game 5-for-5 with four runs scored.  It's the 13th time this season that a major leaguer has amassed five hits in a game; Marv Owen of the Detroit Tigers has managed five hits in a game twice.

The Dodgers took the lead with four runs in the first inning off Cubs starter Guy Bush and never looked back.  Taylor and Jimmy Jordan opened the game with back-to-back doubles and Johnny Frederick followed with a single, giving Brooklyn a 2-0 lead.  Hack Wilson drew a walk and Sam Leslie's two-bagger to the wall in left-center scored Federick for the third run of the inning.  Tony Cuccinello's ground out scored Wilson to cap the frame's scoring.

The Dodgers added a run in the second, with Taylor again playing a key role.  He tripled with one out and scored on Jordan's fly to center.

The Cubs got on the board with two runs off Brooklyn starter Les Munns in the third.  Billy Herman led off with a triple and a walk to Stan Hack put runners on first and third.  Chuck Klein's fly out to right scored Herman to cut the deficit to 5-1.  Babe Herman and Kiki Cuyler both walked, loading the bases, and Gabby Hartnett's fielder's choice scored Hack with the second run of the inning.

Joe Stripp tripled to open the fourth for the Dodgers and, two outs later, Jordan singled him home to make it 6-2.  But Chicago scored twice in the bottom of the inning to draw within two runs on Klein's double.

But the Dodgers couldn't be stopped.  Stripp's RBI-single in the fifth increased Brooklyn's lead to 7-4.  Taylor's lead-off home run in the sixth made it 8-3 and, two outs later, Wilson's eighth home run of the season made it 9-4.

The only real drama at this point was whether Taylor would complete the cycle.  He only needed a single and, in the seventh, he got it.  Munns had already singled in the team's 10th run, scoring Stripp, who had walked and advanced to second on Al Lopez's sacrifice.  Taylor's single to shallow left, on an 0-1 offering from reliever Pat Malone, finished the cycle

Billy Jurges' solo blast in the bottom of the seventh cut the lead to 10-5, but the Dodgers added yet another run in the eighth when Taylor singled--his fifth hit--advanced to third on Jordan's double and scored on Frederick's fly out.

Including a fourth inning base on balls, Taylor reached base on six consecutive plate appearances, becoming the sixth big leaguer this season to reach base in a game six straight times, and just the fifth to do so in a nine-inning game.
