GOMEZ STYMIES CHISOX FOR 10TH WIN
Yanks Make Most of 5 Hits; Draw 7 BBs

NEW YORK, June 27 (AP) - Lefty Gomez matched the most effective starts of this baseball season, becoming the eighth pitcher to toss a two-hit shutout as the New York Yankees defeated the Chicago White Sox 4-0 at Yankee Stadium.  It was the best start of the season for Gomez, who dropped his ERA below three for the first time this year.  It was the 11th complete game and second shutout for the Yankees left-hander.

The Yankees pushed across the only run they would need off White Sox starter Milt Gaston in the bottom of the third.  Don Heffner drew a lead-off walk--one of seven that Gaston would issue in a complete game effort--and was sacrificed to second by Gomez.  Frank Crosetti followed with a triple to center to give New York a 1-0 lead.

The Yankees doubled their advantage in the fourth.  Lou Gehrig drew another lead-off free pass, advanced to third on Ben Chapman's base hit to right-center field and scored on Bill Dickey's fielder's choice grounder.

New York capped the scoring in the sixth.  Gehrig led off with a single and was forced out by Chapman, who promptly stole second base after reaching on the fielder's choice.  Dickey's ground out to the right side moved Chapman to third and Myril Hoag's base hit to center made it 3-0.  Heffner followed with a triple to right-center, plating Hoag with the fourth run.

Gomez, meanwhile, was simply cruising through the Chicago batting order.  After Jimmy Dykes singled with two outs in the top of the first inning, Gomez retired 15 consecutive batters before walking Evar Swanson with two outs in the sixth.  Al Simmons singled with two outs in the seventh and he was the final baserunner for the White Sox.  Gomez never let a runner make it as far as second base and fanned six for good measure.
