SUHR HITS 2 SLAMS IN BUCS DH SPLIT
Pirates Drop Nightcap Despite Two Slams
PITTSBURGH, June 26 (AP)- The Pittsburgh Pirates entered play on June 26 without
having hit a grand slam in 59 games this season; they concluded the day with
three slams. Gus Suhr hit grand slams in both halves of a doubleheader
split with the Philadelphia Phillies at Forbes Field and Arky Vaughn added a
grand slam of his own in the nightcap. The Pirates won the opener 8-4, in
large part because of Suhr's first inning grand slam. In the second game,
the Phillies overcame an 8-3 deficit, then blew a 12-8 lead, before finally
winning the game in the 10th inning.
In the opener, the Pirates took a lead they would never surrender in the bottom
of the first inning. The rally started when Paul Waner reached on an error
on Phillies third baseman Bucky Walters. Freddie Lindstrom singled Waner
to second and Vaughn drew a walk from Phil Collins to fill the bases. Suhr
then crushed the first pitch he saw from Collins into the right field upper deck
for a grand slam and a 4-0 Pittsburgh lead.
The Phillies got a run in the third when Johnny Moore's double play grounder
scored Kiddo Davis, who had singled, but the Pirates got the run back times
three in their half of the inning, with all three runs unearned. After
Vaughn reached base to open the frame on shortstop Dick Bartell's error, Suhr
bounced a single into left field to put runners on first and second.
Bartell then kicked Pie Traynor's grounder to load the bases with no outs.
Collins issued back-to-back walks to Cookie Lavagetto and Tom Padden, forcing in
a pair of runs. Pirates starter Ralph Birkhofer forced Traynor at the
plate on a grounder for the first out, but Lloyd Waner's infield single scored a
third run before Paul Waner rolled into an inning-ending double play.
Pittsburgh now led 7-1.
The Pirates extended their lead to 8-1 in the sixth when Traynor doubled home
Lindstrom and the Phillies drew a bit closer with three runs across the seventh
and eighth innings, but it wasn't nearly enough and Leon Chagnon closed out the
game with a perfect ninth.
The nightcap was a wild contest. Each club picked up an unearned run over
the first two innings, leaving the score tied at one. The Phillies took
the lead in the third when Kiddo Davis led off the inning with a triple and
scored on Bartell's base hit. But in the bottom of the third, Suhr struck
again. Lloyd Waner drew a lead-off walk and then, one out later, Lindstrom
singled him to second. Vaughn drew a walk from Ed Holley to load the bases
and then Suhr picked on the first pitch he saw yet again and hammered out a
second grand slam, putting Pittsburgh on top 5-2.
An Irv Jeffries fielder's choice plated a third Philadelphia run in the fourth
but Pittsburgh scored three more unearned runs in the bottom of the
inning. With two outs, Paul Waner's swinging bunt led to two-base throwing
error on catcher Al Todd. Lindstrom then singled, scoring Waner and Vaughn
and Suhr hit successive triples, giving the Pirates an 8-3 lead.
The game appeared to be all but over but this is when the Phillies began their
comeback. Bartell drew a lead-off walk from Red Lucas and Moore followed
with his fifth home run of the year, cutting the Pirates lead to 8-5.
In the sixth, the Phillies surged ahead, with a six-run outburst. The
first seven batters reached base safely. Jeffries doubled and pitcher
Snipe Hansen drew a walk. That ended the day for Lucas; he was replaced by
Heine Meine, who walked Davis to load the bases. Bartell's infield hit
scored Jeffries to cut the deficit to two runs and left the bases full.
Moore then grounded a double into the left field corner, tying the game leaving
runners on second and third. Ethan Allen followed with a triple to right,
putting Philadelphia on top 10-8. Dolph Camilli drew a walk to reload the
bases and, after Todd flied to shallow center to finally record the inning's
first out, Walters hit into a fielder's choice, allowing the 11th Phillies run
to score.
Allen's home run over the left field wall in the eighth gave Philadelphia a
seemingly safe 12-8 lead but the Pirates got off the deck and rallied to tie the
game in the bottom half--with the grand slam again raising its head. The
Waner brothers slapped back-to-back singles to open the inning off Hansen and
Curt Davis came on in relief for the Phillies. But he was greeted by an
infield single off the bat of Lindstrom to load the bases yet again. That
brought Vaughn to the plate and, for the third time on the day, a Pirates hitter
picked on the first pitch he saw and hit a grand slam. The drive, just
inside the right field line, was the fourth home run of the year for Vaughn and
tied the game.
After a mostly uneventful ninth, Davis drew a lead-off walk for the Phillies
from Waite Hoyt to open the inning. Bartell sacrificed the runner to
second. Moore grounded out to short for the second out, but Allen came
through again, lining a single to left, scoring Davis and driving in the fourth
run of the game in the process.
Davis retired the Pirates in order in the bottom of the tenth to close out the
game.
By hitting grand slams in each contest, Suhr becomes the second major leaguer
this season to hit multiple slams. Wally Berger of the Boston Braves has
hit three grand slams this year. The slams hit by the Pirates in the
nightcap mark the first time a team has hit more than one grand slam in a single
game this season.
