COLEMAN'S CYCLE PACES A'S 13TH STRAIGHT 'W'
Shellacking Is 5th Consecutive Detroit 'L'
PHILADELPHIA, June 25 (AP) - Ed Coleman became the fourth major leaguer to hit
for the cycle this season, leading the Philadelphia Athletics to a 19-3 pounding
of the Detroit Tigers at Shibe Park. It was the 13th consecutive win for
the red hot A's--the second longest winning streak in the major leagues this
season--and the fifth straight loss for the Tigers. The losing streak is
the longest of the season thus far for Detroit.
The loss is the worst of the season for the first place Tigers and the win the
largest for the A's. The contest is also the first this year that saw
Philadelphia exceed 20 hits.
The A's essentially broke the game open in the very first inning, scoring six
runs off Detroit starter Tommy Bridges. Pinky Higgins singled home a pair
of runs and was followed by a two-run triple off the bat of Coleman.
Charlie Berry and Eric McNair both singled home runs before Bridges finally
recorded the third out of the frame, after 11 Philadelphia hitters came to the
plate.
The A's plated seven runs over the next four innings to blow the game wide
open. Higgins' two-run homer in the second marked the end of the day for
Bridges, in what was by far his shortest start of the year; he was removed
having retired only four of the 14 batters he faced, having allowed eight
runs. He would be replaced by Luke Hamlin, who didn't fair much
better. Doc Cramer's solo home run in the bottom of the third made it 9-0
in favor of Philadelphia and RBI singles off the bats of Coleman and Rabbit
Warstler made it 11-0 before the end of the inning. Bob Johnson belted his
15th home run of the season, a two-run shot, to make it 13-0 in the fourth.
Mickey Cochrane's two-run homer in the top of the fifth got the Tigers on the
board but Coleman hit one out in the bottom of the inning to make the score
14-2.
Hank Greenberg's run-scoring grounder in the top of the sixth gave Detroit a
meaningless third run but in the seventh, the A's erupted for five more runs to
cap the scoring. Higgins reached on a Charlie Gehringer error to open the
frame and then Coleman completed his cycle with a double to right-center.
One out later, Dib Williams' infield single scored Higgins and another infield
hit, this one off the bat of Philadelphia starter Johnny Marcum, brought Coleman
home. McNair then tripled home two more runs and Cramer flied to center,
bringing home McNair.
Marcum ran out of gas in the ninth inning, allowing the first two batters to
reach, and was replaced by Sugar Cain who needed only three pitches to obtain
all three outs and close the game.
Coleman becomes the second A's player to hit for the cycle this season.
Bob Johnson accomplished the feat on May 2 against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway
Park.
