MOORE EXTENDS HITTING STREAK TO 30
Despite 15-Hit Attack Giants Fall to Cards
ST. LOUIS, June 24 (AP) - Jo-Jo Moore extended his major league best hitting
streak to 30 games but the New York Giants lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 12-7
at Sportsman's Park. The two teams are now in a virtual tie for first
place in the National League standings.
Moore finished the game with four hits and is batting .410 (59-for 144) since
the streak began on May 23 with a 1-for-5 performance at the Polo Grounds
against the Chicago Cubs. Moore has had at least two hits in 20 of the 30
games during the streak, including a stretch of 11 consecutive multi-hit efforts
from May 28 through June 7.
The Giants scored first in the contest when Moore led off the top of the opening
frame with a single to center, moved to second one out later when Bill Terry
drew a walk from Cardinals starter Tex Carleton and scored on Travis Jackson's
two-out base hit.
But St. Louis responded with four runs in the home half of the first; all of the
runs were unearned, establishing a bad trend in the game for New York.
Back-to-back singles off the bats of Jack Rothrock and Frankie Frisch put
runners on first and second with one out and then Giants second baseman Hughie
Critz booted Joe Medwick's sure double play grounder, loading the bases.
Ripper Collins' slow grounder to first scored Rothrock with the tying run and
Bill DeLancey rolled a single through the box to score Frisch and Jackson to
make it 3-1. Ernie Orsatti's double plated DeLancey to give the Cardinals
a 4-1 lead.
The Giants got two runs back in the third and the St. Louis defense aided the
effort. Mel Ott and Jackson singled with one out and then George Watkins
played the role of Medwick, grounding a tailor made double play ball to
shortstop Leo Durocher, whose flip to Frisch at second was errant. Ott
scored and New York had runners on first and third with one out. Blondie
Ryan's single to center scored Jackson to make it 4-3 before Carleton was able
to get out of the inning.
The Giants then tied the game in the fourth when Moore singled and eventually
scored on Ott's two-bagger.
The Cardinals reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Rothrock
singled with two outs, stole second and scored on Frisch's base hit. But
New York took the lead for the first time and drove Carleton from the game in
the fifth. Ryan led off with a base hit and, one out later, advanced to
third when Giants starter Freddie Fitzsimmons doubled to right. Moore then
drove a ball off the screen in right field for a double of his own, scoring both
runners to make it 6-5 New York.
The lead was short-lived as St. Louis erupted for four runs in the fifth,
knocking Fitzsimmons from the box in the process. Back-to-back one-out
doubles from DeLancey and Orsatti tied the score at six and Durocher's base hit
put runners on first and third. Pitcher Jim Mooney popped out and it
appeared Fitzsimmons might avoid further damage but Pepper Martin laced a double
into the left field corner, scoring Orsatti and chasing Durocher to third.
Joe Bowman replaced Fitzsimmons at that point but on Bowman's first pitch
catcher Gus Mancuso allowed a passed ball, scoring Durocher for an 8-6
lead. A Rothrock single scored Martin to make it 9-6 before Bowman ended
the inning.
Ryan doubled home Jackson in the top of the sixth to cut the New York deficit to
two but, aided by yet another error, the Cardinals scored three more times in
the home half of the inning. Facing Slick Castleman, Ripper Collins led
off with a single and then Jackson kicked DeLancey's would-be double play
grounder for an error. Orsatti's infield hit filled the bases and
Durocher's fly ball scored Collins. One out later, Martin walked to load
the bases and Rothrock's two-run single gave St. Louis a 12-7 lead.
Miraculously, that was the end of the scoring. Dizzy Dean tossed 3 1/3
innings of hitless, shutout relief for the Cardinals to close out the game and
Castleman held the Giants off the scoreboard over his final two innings of
work. In all, eight of the 19 runs scored in the contest were unearned,
seven of them surrendered by New York.
