NATS SNAP 10-GAME 'L' STREAK BEHIND BURKE'S GEM
Gehringer Amasses ML Best 33rd Multi-Hit Game
WASHINGTON, June 22 (AP) - Bobby Burke tossed his first complete game of the
season as the Washington Senators ended a 10-game losing streak with a 3-2
ten-inning victory over the first place Detroit Tigers at Griffith
Stadium. It was only the fourth loss for the Tigers since May 20, during
which time they've compiled a 28-4 record. This contest marked only the
second time in 59 games this season that Detroit has failed to record an extra
base hit. Washington was the opponent on the other such occasion (May 20
at Navin Field).
Burke yielded both Detroit runs in the top of the first inning, only one of
which was earned. Pete Fox opened the game by reaching first on shortstop
Joe Cronin's error and stole second base. Gee Walker's fly out to center
allowed Fox to advance to third and he scored on Goose Goslin's base hit.
Goslin then came home on Charlie Gehringer's single to left, with Gehringer
being thrown out at second when his attempt to advance on the throw to the plate
was foiled when the Senators cut off the throw.
Tigers starter Carl Fischer held Washington scoreless until the fifth when the
Senators tied the game. With one out, Cecil Travis singled and was forced
at second on Joe Kuhel's fielder's choice grounder. Fischer then walked
Eddie Phillips to put runners on first and second and Burke, who entered the
game with a batting average below .100, helped his own cause by dropping a base
hit into shallow right field, scoring Kuhel and advancing Phillips to
third. Buddy Myer followed by grounding a single through the box, scoring
Phillips to tie the game. John Stone popped out to end the inning, but the
contest was now knotted at two runs apiece.
The Senators had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the bottom of the
seventh when Kuhel and Phillips led off with back-to-back singles, putting
runners on first and second. But Burke's attempt to advance the runners
with a sacrifice went badly awry. He popped up the bunt, it was snared by
third baseman Marv Owen who fired to Billy Rogell at second to double off Kuhel.
Myer then flied out to end the threat.
The Tigers then missed a chance to move on top in the eighth. With one
out, Hank Greenberg singled to center and advanced to second when Ray Hayworth
reached on an infield hit. Owen then walked, filling the bases.
Fischer was due up and Detroit tried to take advantage of the late-inning
situation by sending Frank Doljack to the plate as a pinch hitter but the move
backfired spectacularly when Doljack rolled into a 1-2-3 double play to end the
inning with the score still tied.
No one threatened again until the bottom of the tenth. Burke, rebounding
from the troublesome first inning, held the Tigers scoreless through the first
extra frame. In the bottom of the inning, Detroit reliever Vic Frazier was
entering his third inning of work and he walked pinch hitter Dave Harris leading
off. Burke hit for himself and this time successfully got the bunt down,
sacrificing Harris to second. That brought Myer to the plate and on the
very first pitch he saw from Frazier ripped a line drive into the right field
corner for what was ruled a double. Harris came around to score easily on
the play to give the Senators their long-awaited win.
Burke becomes the first Washington starter to work past the ninth inning this
season.
Detroit's Charlie Gehringer singled twice in four at-bats, giving him 33
multi-hit games on the season in 59 appearances, the most in either league thus
far this year. It was the 10th multi-hit effort for Gehringer in his last
13 games, during which time the Tigers second baseman is 33-for-64 (.516).
In the month of June (20 games) Gehringer is hitting .488 (40-for-82).
Overall, Gehringer leads the American League with a .427 batting average.
