RED HOT TIGERS TAKE YANKS TO WOODSHED
3rd Detroit 20-Hit Effort in 2 Weeks

NEW YORK, June 18 (AP) - The Detroit Tigers continued their lethal offensive output, battering a trio of New York pitchers for 23 hits en route to a 20-8 victory at Yankee Stadium.  It was the third time in the past 12 days that the Tigers have amassed at least 20 hits in a game.  The victory was Detroit's 27th in the last 30 contests the club has played dating back to May 20.  During that time the Tigers have outscored their opponents 251-104.

The contest was competitive for the first five innings, but Detroit scored 11 runs from the sixth inning on, aided by five Yankees miscues.

The Tigers took the lead in the top of the first inning when Goose Goslin drew a one-out walk, advanced to third on Charlie Gehringer's double and scored on Billy Rogell's base hit.

The Yankees evened the score in the bottom half of the opening frame on Ben Chapman's ninth home run of the year, a solo shot with two outs.

But Detroit took the lead for good with three runs in the third.  Pete Fox led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on Russ Van Atta's balk.  Gee Walker's roller to first was booted by Lou Gehrig for an error, putting runners on first and third, and Goslin followed with a base hit to right, scoring Fox and moving Walker to third.  Gehringer's potential double play grounder was booted by shortstop Red Rolfe for the second New York error of the inning, allowing Walker to score and moving Goslin to second.  One out later Hank Greenberg's base hit scored Gehringer to put the Tigers ahead 4-1.

The Yankees got two runs back in the home half of the third.  Earl Combs drew a lead-off walk from Firpo Marberry and moved to third on Rolfe's base hit.  Ben Chapman rolled into a double play, allowing Combs to score but clearing the bases.  Gehrig then followed with his major league leading 24th home run of the year, just inside the right field foul pole, to cut the deficit to 4-3.

But the relentless Tigers extended their lead and knocked Van Atta from the game in the fourth, aided by two more Yankees errors.  Marberry reached second leading off when Van Atta threw the ball away after fielding a roller back to the box.  Fox's base hit moved Marberry to third and Walker's fly ball plated the runner from third and upped the advantage to 5-3.  A single by Goslin put runners on first and third and Gehringer's double scored Fox to make it 6-3, advancing Goslin to third in the process.  That was it for Van Atta.  He was replaced on the mound by Jimmy DeShong and it briefly appeared as though further damage would be avoided when Rogell grounded to third and Frankie Crosetti cut down Goslin at the plate for the second out.  But Hank Greenberg upset the apple cart by driving a DeShong offering deep into the lower left field grandstand for a three-run homer and a 9-3 Detroit advantage.  Three more batters would come to the plate--and another error, this one on Crosetti, would be committed--before the inning finally came to an end.

But the Yankees fought back, scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth on Chapman's two-run single and three more times in the fifth on Crosetti's solo home run and a two-run single off the bat of Combs.

With their lead down to 9-8, the Tigers finally seized control of the game once and for all in the top of the sixth, courtesy of RBI singles delivered by Ray Hayworth and Marv Owen.  The lead increased to 12-8 in the seventh when Goslin doubled with one out and was singled home by Gehringer.

But the decisive blow came in the eighth when Detroit scored eight runs.  Facing Johnny Broaca, Owen led off with a base hit and then Luke Hamlin and Fox laid down consecutive bunt singles to fill the bases.  Walker followed with a grand slam, giving the Tigers a 16-8 lead.  Goslin singled and Gehringer drew a walk before Rogell finally delivered the first out with a fielder's choice that forced Goslin at third.  Greenberg dropped a single into center field, scoring Gehringer, but Rogell became the third Detroit runner to be thrown out on the bases in the contest when Combs got him trying to advance to third.  Owen picked up his second hit of the inning with a double to right-center, scoring Greenberg and advancing to third on the throw to the plate.  Hayworth lined to left but Chapman boxed it for the fifth Yankees error of the contest, and Owen scored on the play, accounting for the final tally.

Hamlin was phenomenal in relief for the Tigers, firing four shutout innings and allowing just one hit.

Walker drove in five runs for Detroit, despite accruing only one hit--the grand slam.  Greenberg also drove in five.  Owen was 5-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and driven in.  All told six Tigers had multi-hit games.
