REDS PROCURE SEASON'S 1ST WINNING STREAK...ON JUNE 14
Cincy Continues to Eschew Multi-Run Victories
CINCINNATI, June 14 (AP) - Adam Comorosky's single in the bottom of the seventh
inning scored Chick Hafey with the game-winning run as the Cincinnati Reds
defeated the New York Giants 2-1 at Crosley Field. The win was the second
straight for the Reds, the first time this season that Cincinnati has won
consecutive games. The last five Reds wins have come by a single
run. Cincinnati has won only two games this season by more than one run,
the last such occasion taking place on May 6, also against the Giants at Crosley
Field.
Giants starter Hal Schumacher allowed just two runs on six hits over eight
innings but was the hard luck loser. Reds starter Benny Frey entered the
contest winless at 0-6 but finally picked up his first victory of the year with
some ninth inning assistance from Paul Derringer.
Cincinnati drew first blood in the bottom of the second inning. Jim
Bottomley drew a lead-off walk and advanced to third on a single by Harlin
Pool. Comorosky's long fly to center field scored Bottomley and gave the
Reds a 1-0 lead.
New York drew even in the top of the third inning. Hughie Critz led off
with a base hit. Bill Terry's roller near the second base bag was fielded
by shortstop Mark Koenig who stepped on the bag for the force and then threw
wildly to first in an attempt to complete the double play, allowing Terry to
reach second on the error. Mel Ott walked, putting runners on first and
second and Travis Jackson followed with a single to right field. Right
fielder Comorosky threw to the plate but it was cut off by first baseman
Bottomley who fired to second, cutting down Jackson. Terry scored on the
play, knotting the game at 1-1.
Both starters fared well through the middle innings and the 1-1 score held up
until the bottom of the seventh. Hafey led off with a single to left and
moved to second when Bottomley rolled a base hit into right. Pool dropped
down a perfect sacrifice, advancing the runners to second and third with one
out. Comorosky then laced a single into left, scoring Hafey with the lead
run with Bottomley stopping at third. Gordon Slade followed with a double
play grounder, but the Reds had regained a one-run lead.
Jackson drew a free pass to open the top of the eighth but Frey induced George
Watkins to bounce into a double play, snuffing out a possible threat.
Schumacher set the Reds down in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Frey retired pinch hitter George Grantham to open the bottom of the ninth but
pinch hitter Lefty O'Doul laced a single. Frey had been dancing between
the raindrops all day--the Giants left 11 men on base--and manager Bob O'Farrell
removed him at this point in favor of Derringer. The move seemed to
backfire when Jo-Jo Moore lined a 1-0 fastball into right field for a base hit,
extending his hitting streak to 21 games and advancing O'Doul to second.
But Derringer retired Critz on a soft roller to second, allowing both runners to
move up 90 feet, and then induced Terry to fly to left to end the game.
