DEAN WINS 10TH AS CARDS TRIP BUCS
DeLancey's PH Single Is Game-Winner
ST. LOUIS, June 10 (AP) - Bill DeLancey's pinch hit single in the bottom of the
ninth scored Ernie Orsatti with the winning run as the St. Louis Cardinals
defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 at Sportsman's Park. Dizzy Dean was
the beneficiary of the late-inning rally and, as a result, became the first
National League hurler to win 10 games this season. (Schoolboy Rowe of the
Detroit Tigers became the first pitcher in the majors to reach double digits in
victories with a win over the Cleveland Indians on June 6.) Frankie Frisch
drove home three runs for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals drew first blood, plating a pair of runs in the first inning off
Pirates starter Heine Meine. Burgess Whitehead led off with a single to
center and advanced to second on Jack Rothrock's sacrifice. Frisch then
belted a Meine offering over the right field screen onto the pavilion roof for
his first home run of the season and a 2-0 St. Louis lead.
The Pirates tied the game with single runs in the second and third off
Dean. Gus Suhr drew a lead-off walk in the second, moved to third on Woody
Jensen's double into the left field corner and scored on Tommy Thevenow's
infield out. In the top of the third, Lloyd Waner led off with a double,
moved to third on Paul Waner's infield single and came home one out later on
Arky Vaughan's infield roller, tying the score at two.
The Cardinals regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Whitehead
reached on a one-out infield single, stole second, and scored one out later on
Frisch's base hit.
But the Pirates evened the score in the top of the seventh. Jensen reached
on a lead-off infield hit, moved to second on Thevenow's sacrifice and scored on
Earl Grace's line drive single to right-center.
The score remained 3-3 into the ninth. The Pirates loaded the bases with
one out in the top of the inning but failed to score when Dean induced a shallow
fly off the bat of Meine and an inning-ending fly ball from Lloyd Waner.
Having survived the top of the inning without surrendering the lead, the
Cardinals seized the game in the bottom half. Orsatti reached on another
infield single and was sacrificed to second by Leo Durocher. DeLancey was
summoned to pinch hit for Dean and the lefty swinger laced a 1-1 fastball into
left-center field, scoring Orsatti easily to win the game.
