10-RUN INNING PACES TIGERS' ROUT
Detroit Winning Streak Now at 14

DETROIT, June 6 (AP) - The Detroit Tigers scored 10 times in the sixth inning and went on to throttle the Cleveland Indians 16-4 at Navin Field for their 14th consecutive win. The Tigers sent 15 batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth, amassing 12 hits en route to the 10-run outburst. Detroit is the first team in the major leagues this season to reach double digits in runs in a single inning.

Cleveland center fielder Earl Averill hit a pair of home runs in a losing cause, giving him five in the span of just two days. Averill hit three home runs in the first game of a doubleheader on June 5 and has a big league best three multi-home run games thus far this year.

The game was unremarkable prior to the big inning. The Tigers took the early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Pete Fox led off with his third home run of the season. Goose Goslin then drew a walk from Indians starter Bob Weiland and Gee Walker singled him to second. Charlie Gehringer flied to center but Billy Rogell dropped a single into shallow left, scoring Goslin to make it 2-0 in favor of Detroit.

Cleveland got a run back in the second when Johnny Burnett doubled with one out off Schoolboy Rowe and scored when Glenn Myatt followed with a base hit.
The Tigers regained their two-run advantage in the fourth when Ray Hayworth singled with two outs and scored on Marv Owen's double.  In the fifth, RBI singles off the bats of Goslin and Gehringer gave Detroit a 5-1 lead and the Indians cut that advantage to 5-2 on Averill's first home run of the game in the top of the sixth.

The first eight Tigers batters reached base safely in the bottom of the sixth.  Facing reliever Mel Harder, consecutive singles from Rowe, Fox and Goslin led to the first Detroit run and left runners on first and third.  Walker made it 7-2 with another base hit, leaving runners on second and third when Cleveland left fielder Joe Vosmik committed an error on the play.  Gehringer's single brought home two more runs and Billy Rogell followed with a base hit, putting runners on the corners.  Hank Greenberg then cleared the bases with a a triple to right-center, making the score 11-2.  Clint Brown replaced Harder but the hit parade continued.  Hayworth's double to right plated Greenberg to give Detroit a 12-2 lead.  Owen grounded out to short, for the first out of the inning, with Hayworth advancing to third.  Rowe then slashed his second base hit of the frame, scoring Hayworth with the 13th run.  Fox reached on an infield hit to put runners on first and second and Walker flied out to deep right with Rowe advancing to third.  Gehringer then lined his second two-run single of the inning before Rogell flied out to mercifully end the inning with the Tigers on top 15-2.
Averill's second home run of the game, a two-run blast that followed Bill Knickerbocker's base hit, came in the eighth and cut the lead to 15-4 but Goslin reached on a two-out infield single in the eighth before Walker cracked out his fourth hit of the game, a triple, to account for the 16-4 final.

Rowe went the distance and in the process became the first big league hurler to reach 10 wins on the season.
