NATS COMPLETE DH SWEEP WITH 20-RUN OUTBURST
8 Members of Washington Lineup Amass Multi-Hit Games

WASHINGTON, June 5 (AP) - The Washington Senators completed a doubleheader sweep of the Philadelphia Athletics with a Game 2 20-5 throttling at Griffith Stadium.  After tripping the A's in the opener by a score of 7-4, the Senators set a new major league season high with 25 hits in the nightcap, battering four Philadelphia pitchers.  All eight position players in Washington's starting lineup had at least two hits (and at least one run batted in) and six of them had at least three safeties.  Even starting pitcher Montie Weaver and reliever Jack Russell got in on the fun, both going 1-for-2.  In a losing effort, Jimmie Foxx reached base in all five of his plate appearances, going 4-for-4, including a double and triple, and drew a walk for good measure.

The Senators scored early and often and by the end of the fourth inning the contest was effectively decided.  Washington is dead last in the American League in home runs per game played and did all of its damage in this game without the aid of the long ball.

The Senators took the lead in the bottom of the first inning when Buddy Myer doubled with one out and scored two batters later on John Stone's two-bagger.  Washington added four runs in the second on consecutive two-out, two-run singles off the bats of Heinie Manush and Joe Kuhel.

After the A's gave vague, ultimately false signs of getting back in the game in the top of the fifth when Pinky Higgins singled and later scored on a fielder's choice, the Senators emphatically added to their lead, scoring twice more in the bottom half of the inning.  Cecil Travis tripled home a pair of runs and Washington led, 10-1.

Philadelphia plated a pair of tallies in the sixth to make it 10-3, but Washington again put the hammer down in the bottom of the frame, scoring three more runs, on a single by Fred Schulte, a triple off the bat of Myer and another RBI single credited to Manush.

Foxx's triple and a deep fly off the bat of Eric McNair plated two more runs for the A's in the seventh but again the Senators matched Philadelphia'a output in the bottom half of the inning.  Consecutive doubles by Eddie Phillips and Joe Cronin scored the first run and Schulte's fly ball made it 15-5.

Washington mercilessly scored five more runs in the eighth.  Four hits, three walks and an error on A's catcher Franklin Hayes did the damage, accounting for the 20-5 final.
