AVERILL BELTS 3 HRs IN LOSING CAUSE
Tigers Extend 'W' Streak to 12

DETROIT, June 5 (AP) - Earl Averill hit three home runs off Detroit pitching but did so in a losing cause as the Detroit Tigers hammered the Cleveland Indians 13-6 in the first game of a doubleheader at Navin Field.  The Indians pounded out 17 hits but, despite not hitting any home runs, the Tigers had 19 safeties of their own, with seven members of the starting lineup amassing at least two hits apiece.

The game was more or less competitive for the first six innings.  Detroit scored first, when Billy Rogell led off with a single, stole second base, and scored one out later on Ray Hayworth's base hit.

Cleveland assumed a 2-1 lead in the third when Sam Rice singled with one out, stole second and after Bill Knickerbocker struck out, trotted home on Averill's first home run of the contest.

The Tigers tied the score in the fourth when pitcher Vic Sorrell singled home Rogell.

The Indians regained the lead with a two-run fifth.  Knickerbocker doubled with one out and Averill's bomb into the right-center field bleachers put Cleveland on top 4-2.

But Detroit tied it again in the bottom of the inning.  Pete Fox led off with a single off Lloyd Brown and moved to second on a Goose Goslin's ground out.  Gee Walker's base hit cut the deficit to 4-3.  Walker stole second and, one out later, scored on Rogell's single.

Knickerbocker's RBI single in the top of the sixth gave Cleveland a 5-4 advantage, but the Tigers took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning.  Marv Owen drew a lead-off walk and scored one out later on Fox's two-bagger, tying the game.  Goslin drew a free pass, putting runners on first and second, bringing an end to Lloyd's outing; he was replaced on the mound at this point by Belve Bean and he retired Walker on a fly ball.  But Charlie Gehringer followed with a two-run double to right-center, scoring both Fox and Goslin, putting Detroit on top 7-5.

The Tigers then blew the game open once and for all in the bottom of the seventh.  With one out, Hayworth singled and moved to second on Owen's base hit.  Pitcher Carl Fischer sacrificed the runners to second and third.  The next six batters all reached base safely.  Fox, Goslin, Walker, Gehringer and Rogell all singled off Bean, giving Detroit an 11-5 lead.  Bean was replaced by Ralph Winegarner on the mound and he promptly yielded Hank Greenberg's two-run base hit, making the score 13-5.

In the ninth, facing Fischer, Averill drilled a solo home run, his third of the game and 11th of the year, thus becoming the first American Leaguer to hit three home runs in a single game this season.

Detroit's 12-game winning streak is the longest in the major leagues thus far this year.  There have been only two winning streaks of at least 10 games this season and the Tigers hold both of them.
