BARTELL'S CYCLE HIGHLIGHTS PHILS' BLOWOUT WIN
Worst Giants 'L' of Year By Far; 11 Straight Phils Reach Base
NEW YORK, June 3 (AP) - Dick Bartell became the third major leaguer to hit for
the cycle this season and the Philadelphia Phillies pounded the New York Giants
19-4 at the Polo Grounds. The Giants, who have the top pitching staff in
the National League, suffered their worst defeat of the season, by a wide
margin. New York pitchers hadn't surrendered more than seven runs in a
single game this season, but in this contest they yielded eight runs in the
fifth inning alone. For their part, the Phillies significantly surpassed
their previous season high in runs (13) and also set a new benchmark in hits in
a single game. Seven members of the Philadelphia starting lineup amassed
at least two hits.
The Phillies effectively won the game in the top of the first inning, plating
five runs--one more than the Giants would score in the entire contest.
Bartell took New York starter Watty Clark off the facade of the upper deck with
a lead-off home run and the next four batters all reached safely as well.
When the dust settled, the Phillies had sent 10 batters to the plate and scored
five times.
Mel Ott's long fly off Phillies starter Curt Davis plated Jo-Jo Moore to cut the
deficit to 5-1 in the bottom of the opening frame, but it wouldn't matter.
The Phillies scored two more runs in the second when Ethan Allen drew a one-out
walk and trotted home on Johnny Moore's home run, giving Philadelphia a 7-1
lead. Moore's home run chased Clark from the game, but the Phillies showed
no sympathy to the four New York relief pitchers they faced. Joe Bowman,
Clark's replacement, surrendered two more runs in the top of the third on a
run-scoring double off the bat of Johnny Moore and Jimmie Wilson's RBI
single.
Travis Jackson's two-run home run in the bottom of the third briefly cut the New
York lead to 9-3 but the Phillies put the game away once and for all with their
eight-run fifth inning. Bud Clancy drew a lead-off walk from Bowman and
moved to second on Allen's base hit. Giants catcher Paul Richards picked
Clancy off second base for the first out but Moore drew a walk and Wilson
singled home Allen, giving Philadelphia a 10-3 lead. Manager Bill Terry
called on Slim Castleman to replace a tiring Bowman and that proved to be a bad
decision. Castleman faced seven batters and retired none of them, allowing
four singles and three walks before being pulled with the Giants trailing
17-3. Dolf Luque came on and retired the next two hitters to finally
retire the side, but the Phillies, having sent 13 men to the plate in the top of
the fifth, had batted around for the second time in the game. In all, the
first 11 Philadelphia hitters reached base safely to open the frame, shattering
the previous big league high for consecutive batters reaching base safely for
the season (eight, accomplished four times).
Though the game was literally only half over, it was completely at an end from a
practical standpoint. The Phillies netted single runs in the sixth (Irv
Jeffries' solo home run) and seventh (Clancy's RBI single) to round out their
scoring. The Giants managed a consolation run in the bottom of the ninth
to account for the final score.
After the home run leading off the game, Bartell doubled and scored in the third
and singled and scored amidst the eight-run fifth inning uprising. In the
seventh, needing only a triple for the cycle, Bartell laced a drive into the
deep right-center field Polo Grounds gap and beat the relay throw to third to
complete the cycle. He later scored on an infield out and finished the
game going 4-for-7 with four runs scored and two more driven in.
The two previous players to hit for the cycle this season (Gus Suhr of the
Pirates and Bob Johnson of the A's) both accomplished the feat on May 2.
