TIGERS TOP CHISOX FOR 10TH STRAIGHT 'W'
2nd 10-Game Winning Streak for Bengals
CHICAGO, June 2 (AP) - Firpo Marberry tossed a complete game and the Detroit
Tigers defeated the Chicago White Sox 5-3 at Comiskey Park. It was the
tenth consecutive win for Detroit, matching the longest winning streak in the
major leagues this season. The other 10-game streak? The Tigers own
that one too; Detroit won 10 in a row from April 19 through May 4. The
victory allows the Tigers to keep pace with the first place New York Yankees;
Detroit stands in second place, 1 1/2 games behind New York.
The White Sox, meanwhile, are headed in the other direction. Chicago has
now dropped six straight, matching the club's previous longest losing streak,
set in mid-May.
The White Sox scored first, pushing two runs across in the game's opening
inning. Mule Haas drew a one-out walk from Marberry and Zeke Bonura
followed by launching his seventh home run of the year.
But the Tigers responded immediately in the second off Chicago starter Milt
Gaston. Charlie Gehringer led off the frame with his ninth home run of the
season and Gaston, apparently a bit rattled, issued consecutive walks to Billy
Rogell and Hank Greenberg. One out later, Gaston uncorked a wild pitch,
moving the runners to second and third, and then promptly filled the bases by
walking Marv Owen. Marberry then helped his own cause by grounding a
single into center field, scoring Rogell and Greenberg to give the Tigers a lead
they would never yield.
Detroit added some insurance in the fifth and, once again, Gaston's wildness was
a major factor. The right-hander issued three consecutive walks to open
the inning--Goose Goslin, Mickey Cochrane and Gehringer were the
beneficiaries--and then Gaston, who yielded eight free passes in the game,
surrendered an infield hit to Rogell which scored Goslin to give the Tigers a
4-2 advantage. Greenberg then bounced into a double play, but Cochrane
scored, making the lead 5-2.
The White Sox inched closer in the eighth. Frenchy Bordagary led off with
a single to right and Haas doubled him to third. One out later, Al Simmons
lined out to left and Bordagaray tagged and scored Chicago's third run.
Luke Appling, whose major league best 24-game hitting streak came to an end in
this contest, grounded out to short to end the inning. Marberry yielded a
one-out single to Bob Boken in the bottom of the ninth but was able to close out
the victory without further incident.
