PENNOCK BAFFLES NATS IN SEASON'S DEBUT AS STARTER
Retires 19 Straight in Two-Hit Shutout
WASHINGTON, June 1 (AP) - Herb Pennock's 1934 debut as a starter was a smashing
success. The left-hander, following eight mostly difficult appearances in
relief, took the mound at Griffith Stadium at completely handcuffed the
Washington Senators. The result was an end to Boston's eight-game losing
streak. Pennock held the Senators to just two hits en route to the
complete game two-hit shutout. Pennock becomes just the fifth big
leaguer--and second American League hurler--to toss a complete game two-hitter
this season.
The Red Sox gave Pennock all the runs he would need in the top of the first
inning. Bill Cissell led off the game with a base hit off Washington
starter General Crowder and advanced to third on Billy Werber's double. Ed
Morgan's grounder to short scored Cissell with the first run of the contest and
Roy Johnson's infield single left runners on first and third with one out.
Carl Reynolds' base hit through the box plated Werber with the second run of the
frame and Boston seemed poised for a big inning but Crowder induced a double
play ball off the bat of Dick Porter to end the rally with the Senators trailing
2-0.
Washington managed a threat off Pennock in the bottom of the first when Joe
Kuhel drew a one-out walk and scampered to third on Heine Manush's base hit but
Joe Cronin lined into a double play and Boston continued to hold a 2-0 lead.
From that point on it was tough sledding for the Senators against Pennock, who
set down the next 19 batters he faced. Washington didn't manage its third
baserunner until Fred Schulte led off the eighth with a base hit. That was
the last man Pennock allowed to reach base; he closed out the game retiring 25
of the final 26 hitters he faced.
Crowder had a stretch of his own where he retired nine in a row in the middle
innings but it all came apart for him in the seventh when the Red Sox salted the
contest away. Lyn Lary opened the frame with a single and took second when
Pennock dropped down his second bunt single of the game. Cissell rolled a
base hit into right, scoring Lary and advancing Pennock to second and Werber's
sacrifice left runners on second and third with one out. Morgan made the
bunt pay off by lacing a double into right-center field, scoring both runners to
give Boston a 5-0 advantage and Johnson's base hit brought Morgan home to
account for the 6-0 final.
