REDS 'L' STREAK EXTENDS TO 12
Cards Late-Inning Eruption Adds to Cincy's Woes
CINCINNATI, May 31 (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals scored eight runs over the
final two innings and extended the Cincinnati Reds' losing streak to 12 with a
9-1 decision at Crosley Field. The 12-game streak is the longest in the
major leagues thus far this season. There have been a total of three
double-digit losing streaks in the big leagues this year and the hapless Reds
own two of them. (The other is a 10-game losing streak run off by the
Philadelphia Athletics to open the season.) The Reds are now 4-31 thus far
this year and have dropped 18 of their last 19 contests.
The game was a close, low-scoring affair until the eighth inning as Jesse Haines
of the Cardinals and Paul Derringer of the Reds locked up in a pitchers
duel. The only run in the first seven frames came in the top of the fourth
when Jack Rothrock led off with a triple and scored on Frankie Frisch's grounder
to second.
The 1-0 St. Louis advantage exploded in the eighth. The inning started off
innocently enough when Derringer fanned Bill DeLancey, surrendered a single to
Ernie Orsatti and retired Leo Durocher on a fly to right. But Haines kept
the frame alive by dropping a base hit into left, advancing DeLancey to
second. Then came the key to all the ensuing trouble. Burgess
Whitehead bounced a routine grounder to shortstop Mark Koenig, who fumbled it to
the ground for an error. Instead of the inning being over, the Cardinals
had the bases loaded and the meat of the order coming up. Rothrock cleared
the bags with a triple to right-center field, giving the Cardinals a 4-0
lead. Frisch followed with a single to center, scoring Rothrock and
consecutive base hits off the bats of Joe Medwick and Ripper Collins plated
Frisch with the inning's fifth run before DeLancey grounded out to finally end
the rally with St. Louis on top 6-0. All five of the runs were unearned.
The Reds broke the shutout in the bottom of the eighth when Derringer doubled
home Ernie Lombardi but it was a meaningless event as the Cardinals rallied for
three more runs in the ninth with Whitehead, Rothrock and Frisch each picking up
an RBI. Rothrock finished the game with three hits, including a pair of
triples, and four runs batted in.
Having completed a three-game sweep of the Reds, the Cardinals have won five
straight and have reclaimed first place in the National League, 1/2 game ahead
of both the New York Giants and Chicago Cubs.
The Reds have six more games on their current homestand--three with the Cubs and
three with the Pittsburgh Pirates--and current speculation centers around
whether the Reds will break their losing streak before leaving for a three-game
series with the Cubs at Wrigley Field beginning on June 8.
