AVERILL, VOSMIK, HALE GO BACK-TO-BACK IN TRIBE'S BLOWOUT
Appling Extends Hit Streak to 20
CLEVELAND, May 29 (AP) - Earl Averill, Joe Vosmik and Odell Hale hit consecutive
home runs in the third inning, part of the Cleveland Indians' 11-2 victory over
the Chicago White Sox at League Park. Six different Cleveland batters
amassed at least two hits and the Indians compiled 16 safeties in total.
Vosmik hit a pair of home runs--his first two of the year--and drove in three
runs. Averill went 3-for-4, adding a double to his third inning home run,
and drove in three as well.
The Indians scored all the runs they would need in the very first inning.
After Cleveland starter Mel Harder retired the White Sox in the top of the
frame, Bob Seeds led off the bottom half with a double. Bill
Knickerbocker's ground out moved Seeds to third and Averill's two-bagger drove
home the game's first run. Vosmik then drove an 0-1 pitch from Milt Gaston
over the center field wall for a two-run homer and a 3-0 lead.
The White Sox cut the lead to a single run in the top of the second. With
one out, Jimmy Dykes singled and Bob Boken drew a four-pitch walk. Harding
fanned Hank Madjeski for the second out but Gaston laced a single to right,
scoring Dykes and advancing Boken to second. Frenchy Bordagaray drew a
free pass, loading the bases and Mule Hass was the beneficiary of Harding's
third walk of the inning, forcing in another run. But Bonura grounded out
to end the inning and Harder would shut out the White Sox the rest of the game.
In the third, the Indians blew the game open. Gaston retired Seeds to open
the frame but Knickerbocker lined a single to left. Averill followed with
his eighth home run of the season, a towering blast over the right field wall,
to give the Indians a 5-2 lead. Vosmik followed with his second home run
of the game, into the left field bleachers, for a 6-2 advantage. Hale then
belted his third long ball of the season to complete the trifecta. It's
the first time this season that three consecutive batters have homered.
Cleveland added a run in the fourth when Harder scored on a wild pitch and
another in the sixth when Willie Kamm singled and scored on a Knickerbocker base
hit. The Indians capped the scoring in the eighth on Kamm's RBI grounder
and run-scoring single off the bat of Harder.
One of the few bright spots for the White Sox came when Luke Appling extended
his hitting streak to 20 games with a double in his final at bat.
